4 arrested in beating broadcast on Facebook Live

(CNN)A young woman who broadcast the beating of a man on Facebook Live has been arrested with three others in connection with the gruesome attack, Chicago Police said Wednesday.
The disturbing 30-minute video shows a man tied up and his mouth covered, cowering in the corner of a room. His attackers laugh and shout "f*ck Donald Trump" and "f*ck white people" as they kick and punch him and and cut into his forehead with a knife.
Police described the victim as an 18-year-old with special needs who was taken from the suburbs. Patrol officers found the disoriented young man wandering the street "in crisis" Wednesday afternoon and brought him to a hospital.
Shortly afterward, officers responded to a battery call at a residence near where he was found and saw signs of a struggle and property damage, police said. After viewing the video they determined the victim was the man found on the street and that the people arrested were involved, Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

In reality, there are shitty human beings of all backgrounds. This case makes that apparent. We should hold people who are capable of such actions accountable. They need to go to jail for this. It's horrible the they would abuse anybody. That they would attack anybody for the color of their skin. But even worse is attacking someone who is special needs because they can.
They're blatantly smoking drugs in their video. They think the whole thing is funny.
It's disgusting and they need to suffer the legal consequences of their actions.

Collective guilt sucks and unfortunately a disabled person has paid the price due to his skin color.

(495 posts)I watched as much of the video as I could stand, just to try and understand. These DFIs (Drunken Fuckin' Idiots) were not acting out of anger and protest. They are simply sadists, immersed in and proud of the violent reputation of their gang (PBG, aka Pooh Bear Gang). They called out several times.
I suppose we can be thankful that they were stupid enough to clearly document their crime. But now, more than ever, everyone is at even more risk. They stirred up the white racist shitheads who will point to these 4 monsters and try to say, "I told you so". More people of color will be at risk of "payback", and the self feeding cycle of violence and retribution will continue.
I hope somebody out there has not only the motivation, but the charisma, to help people calm down, open their hearts, and promote the greater good.

3. Arrests were made.

To qualify under current federal law, according to Samuel Bagenstos, a law professor at the University of Michigan and former Department of Justice official, the crime must involve interstate commerce in some way. For a long time, I have tried to support and defend Facebook. But after listening to the criticisms, and seeing how it does more to divide and depress people, and even enable the worst behaviors, to hell with Facebook. I deactivated mine a week ago. I encourage everyone else to do the same. Call your loved ones. Send e-mails, heck, here's a radical idea: Visit the people you care about in person, and give them a real hug, not a virtual poke. And if you really want to be radical: grab an old-fashioned pen and piece of paper and send (gasp!) a LETTER! You'll be helping to save the post office and giving your friends and loved ones something they can literally hold on to!

(18,479 posts)All defendants have been charged with a hate crime, felony aggravated kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. One also has a charge of auto theft and a three of them face burglary charges. Two have arrest records so these are not misguided folks who made a snap bad decision.
I have a prejudice against kidnapping, battery, burglary and theft. Possibly you have some problem with those. Maybe your reaction would be a bit less tolerant if a toy gun was involved or if one of those sterling assailants had a .22 round in their back pocket when arrested.
I have zero understanding of your defense of these alleged criminals nor do I care to. Feel 100% free to not reply.

(7,981 posts)One of the perps picked up the victim at McDonalds on Christmas Eve and they spent the week hanging out, visiting friends before something went terribly wrong resulting in the acts of violence.
The police inferred that the incident was not racially or politically motivated, but rather a series of poor choices made by the individuals.

I don't care if they did it because he was white, special needs, or whatever. That's criminal, nearly sociopathic behavior. To dismiss it as just "bad choices" does the special needs kid a disservice.

Life in prison. No parole. If you can do this to another human being once, you can't be trusted to not do it again.
