Comey defends handling of Clinton email investigation during 'challenging' US election year

Source: Reuters

05 JAN 2017 AT 13:30 ET

FBI Director James Comey on Thursday defended his handling of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s email investigation during the contentious U.S. presidential election, according to a message to FBI staff reported by ABC News.

Comey and the Federal Bureau of Investigation came under criticism from Republicans and Democrats amid its investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s use of a personal email server while U.S. secretary of state.

“I would be lying if I said the external criticism doesn’t bother me at all, but the truth is, it doesn’t bother me much because of the way we made the decision,” Comey said in the New Year’s message, ABC reported. “At every turn last year, we were faced with choosing among bad options and making decisions we knew would bring a torrent of criticism.”

The most furious criticism came after Comey disclosed that the FBI was examining a trove of newly discovered Clinton emails just 11 days before the Nov. 8 vote.

exposing the fact that Trump and Putin were indeed working together on fixing this election.. I mean he knew that and said nothing.

On the other hand who decides not to vote for Hillary because Comey says she had more emails but none of them meant anything?

Are there people this dense that they were on some "fence" over her emails? I assume you either knew there was no story here and she had done nothing wrong at least not on purpose or you believed the lies and thought she was the devil. One or the other.

Hard to imagine anyone in the middle on this, how dumb do you have to be?

who otherwise might have stayed home. It was timed for maximum impact. Even the later "sorry nevermind" was also timed for maximum impact. Given everything else going on, it was another brick in the wall. Take it away or the Wikileaks or the voter suppression or the suspected vote counting then Clinton would not have won. It was a perfect storm.

It was something he could have managed without putting his thumb on the scale. First of all they sat for weeks on the information. A meeting with the impacted parties before announcement might have led to a voluntary investigation of those emails. Then you announce that the emails are same as already been revealed.

Comey will not be judged favorably by history.

First Comey letter didn't say that emails didn't mean anything. It got headlines that investigation into her emails was reopened and media didn't talk about anything else but her emails. Second letter didn't help either, because even though Comey admitted there was nothing new in the emails, the headlines it got is that Hillary avoided prosecution yet again.

that letter just before the election.

IMO, that letter was the reason for Hillary's poll numbers dropping in the last days of the campaign. She had a solid lead and was steadily pulling ahead of Trump, but it all vanished in a matter of days.

We have tremendous reason for distrusting its actions. If Congress won't properly investigate and Trump won't remove Comey, the FBI itself should require Comey to resign.

Comey defends FBI's decisions during 'contentious' election

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/312887-comey-stands-by-decisions-during-contentious-election

By Nikita Vladimirov - 01/05/17 02:40 PM EST

FBI Director James Comey said he stands by the bureau's decisions during "a contentious election cycle."

In a private New Year’s message to FBI staff, Comey praised his employees for a job well done during "a challenging year,” ABC News reported.

He said criticism of the FBI's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of State does not bother him much.

“I would be lying if I said the external criticism doesn’t bother me at all, but the truth is, it doesn’t bother me much because of the way we made the decision,” he wrote.

“At every turn last year, we were faced with choosing among bad options and making decisions we knew would bring a torrent of criticism.”

He did not directly address the bureau’s conclusion in the email probe or the decision to announce new steps in the investigation just before Election Day, instead offering advice for employees facing scrutiny...........................
