Donald Trump on Thursday afternoon blasted Toyota Motor Corporation over the company's plans to build a new factory in Mexico, which were announced in April.
Trump has previously called out American companies for plans to move factory jobs abroad, but Toyota is based in Japan, not the United States.

Toyota Motor said will build a new plant in Baja, Mexico, to build Corolla cars for U.S. NO WAY! Build plant in U.S. or pay big border tax.

Trump wrote that Toyota plans to build a new plant in Baja. However, the company plans to expand production at an existing Baja plant and announced the construction of a new car plant in Guanajuato in April.

UPDATE:
Donald Trump just threatened Toyota but it looks like he got the facts wrong
By Ylan Q. Mui January 5 at 4:37 PM
President-elect Donald Trump continued his Twitter tirade against the auto industry on Thursday, slamming Toyota for investing in Mexico but appearing to misstate key details of the companys operations.
Trump warned the Japanese carmaker over Twitter that it could face hefty fines for building a plant in Baja, Mexico, to sell the popular Corolla sedan to American consumers. But Trumps tweet looks to be incorrect: Toyotas factory in Baja assembles Tacoma trucks, according to the automaker. A new plant in Guanajuato, Mexico, will manufacture Corollas.
That factory broke ground in November, and production is expected to begin in 2019. The work is being shifted to the plant from a facility in Canada. In a statement Thursday, Toyota said that there is no change in employment and production in the United States as a result of the new operations.
Toyota has been part of the cultural fabric in the U.S. for nearly 60 years, the company said. Toyota looks forward to collaborating with the Trump administration to serve in the best interests of consumers and the automotive industry.

This whole thing is not going to end very well for our Country. Toyota is largely owned by the Japan Government. And Japan is the second largest owner of US debt.

(13,616 posts)government by tweet. Simply put American stocks are not going to grow if they have to fear that Donald will tweet and set off a political or economic disaster. it might do the CEOs good if they pool their money, make a hostile takeover of twitter, and cancel Don's privileges. Granted, where would probably get rewarded with a nice stock increase if it canceled Don's account itself, they may complain about free speech, but that's kind of hard to do when what you are fighting for is the right of corporations to cancel free speech if they feel like it. What's he going to do to a fireside chat on PBS every week?
As far as Toyota, it is even worse idea than it ever was to get Japan spooked. With China looking like it's going to take over the South China Sea, Japan knows that it is stuck its neck out for us, a neck that many in China would love to see chopped for both bowel reasons (like the sheer love of imperialism) and for some genuine reasons (like the fact that Japan really hasn't apologized for minor details like killing 22 million Chinese in World War II, 22 million, that is three Holocausts and 2 million to spare!)if Japan begins to feel like the US is going to leave it in the lurch, we can see an exact repeat of what is happening in Western Europe, namely a bunch of people scared, national pride bruised, and a bunch of fascist and ready to fill that void! Does Trump think that the Japanese do not have their equivalent of Breitbart, their version of Marine Le Pen, or Nigel Forange?
Let it sink in, Trump is not even in office yet, he is not even left Trump Tower yet, and already he has done something to encourage fascist on the Atlantic and Pacific fronts! Please do remember,, the last idiot who thought he can go ahead surround himself with enemies and somehow when was a fellow by the name of Hitler! Go ahead and chant about how I am breaking Godwin's law, because sometimes a fascist is a fascist. I really do not want to see what sort of wall the people Trump is encouraging would build, and I'm not talking about a wall between us and Mexico, I am talking about the modern version of the Berlin wall, which many across the world with love to see.

I saw Trump as a fascist 18 mounts ago - when he started his bid for the primaries.. He played straight out of the same script book Hitler used 90 years ago - and acted in a way true the primaries, and general election who was a scary reminder of what Hitler did in Germany - Of course it was differences between what Hitler did, and what Trump did - but the similarities is there - a Demagogue who is talking, and millions believe his words - and the fact Trump have the support of the US Nazi Party, the KKK and other groups, on the right who have had some of a Renaissance the last couple of years specially as an result of the election of Trump as the next US President.. should make everyone pause.. And it is clearly that many on the far right feel embolden enough, to make their identity known, as they marsh true streets again, treating everyone who is not in agreement with them. It is the way SA and later SS started - as groups who marched and treated ordinary germans to be quiet - and then ruled by fear....

(47,501 posts)The man is starting to believe his own hype. "Hey, I just tweet something and people do whatever I want! Its tremendous." He is pissing off too many really powerful people and he isn't even president yet. Someone needs to tell him he is not God and there are consequences to his indiscriminate tweeting.

(50,560 posts)I don't think Trump wants to go to the World Trade Organization and explain to them why he's trying to order non-US companies around.
Also, I found this on Autoblog (http://www.autoblog.com/2015/04/16/toyota-guanajuato-mexico-plant-official/):
To more efficiently supply high-quality and attractive vehicles, Toyota will continue regional consolidation of North American production based on vehicle body type and size. In 2019, production of the Corolla will be shifted from the plant in Cambridge Ontario, Canada (TMMC) to the newly opened plant in Mexico, and the plant in Blue Springs, Mississippi (TMMMS) will continue to produce the Corolla; consolidating compact vehicle production to the Southern United States and Mexico.
TMMC will then focus its production on mid-sized vehicles of higher value, along with Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana, Inc. (TMMI).
Which is also what Ford was thinking when they decided to move Focus production to Mexico: it takes the same number of people and the same size factory to make a $15,000 car as it does to make a $25,000 one...so if we're going to hire American workers and pay them American wages, let's have them make expensive cars.

(2,674 posts)Toyota is moving its US headquarters to the Dallas area next year, they are building the campus right now. The president of Toyota US was on the Dallas PBs station and explained that it is cheaper to make one model in one factory, then ship all over the world. Toyota has several factories here in the US and the models made here are shipped all over the world. GM has a plant in Arlington making SUVs that is running 24-7 right now. GM is building a 3 billion dollar plant to stamp car bodies next to their Arlington plant. These are bodies will probably be shipped to many other countries. Don't need to start trade wars now.
As far as NAFTA goes, Texas has benefited from NAFTA big time. Texas leads the states in exports with over 20% of the Texas exports going to Mexico. Texas exports far more than Just oil and cattle, it is electronics, cars, software and many other items. The state economy is booming, even with the drop in oil prices, the unemployment rate is below the US average. Many big companies are relocating to Texas and having trouble hiring enough workers. Why anyone who lives in Texas voted for Trump is beyond me.
