Ben Carson: No 'extra rights' for LGBT people if he becomes HUD Secretary

Ben Carson was asked about his position on LGBT housing discrimination and said he opposed extra rights for LGBT people.
In confirmation hearings for the Housing and Urban Development Secretary-nominee on Thursday, Senator Sherrod Brown pressed Carson on whether he believed the HUD had a duty to take actions to reduce anti-LGBT discrimination.
Of course, I would enforce all the laws of the land, Carson responded. And I believe that all Americans regardless of any of the things that you mentioned should be protected by the law. What I have mentioned in the past is the fact that no one gets extra rights. Extra rights means you get to redefine everything for everybody else. That doesnt seem very fair to me. Later, in response to a question from Senator Cortez Masto, Carson said he would absolutely protect the LGBTQ communinity from discrimination.
It is unclear what exactly Carson meant in his answer. There is no statutory law that prohibits housing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and discrimination on the basis of gender identity is only actionable under the Fair Housing Acts ban on sex-based discrimination. Discrimination is only prohibited by the HUDs Equal Access Rule that bans discrimination in FHA-backed loans.

(3,847 posts)Carson has had NO government experience and probably didn't have a damn thing to watch his own financial. As a great surgeon he created mass wealth for himself and family, he lives in great houses, but he has never lived in poverty to the point where he will be thrown out on the streets for him making it impossible to pay their rent.
Wicked, bad immoral, sinfiul, vile and of course malicious. He's another completely unqualified for, he like all the others shoud be banned from all government positions.

Has anyone asked him about that cognitive disconnect?

(46,335 posts)"Extra rights" and "special rights" were the same terms used by racists to oppose fair housing for blacks and other non-whites.

(61,900 posts)Carson has called legislative efforts for equality a "socialist experiment."
He beat the "special rights" drum repeatedly during his own and Trump's
Presidential campaigns.

(58,724 posts)Wouldnt that be the same as if you woke up tomorrow morning after seeing a movie about Afghanistan or reading some books and said, You know what? Im Afghanistan [sic]. I know I dont look that way. My ancestors came from Sweden, or something, I dont know. But I really am. And if you say Im not, youre a racist. This is how absurd we have become!

(2,809 posts)Just regurgitated newspeak to block what we've been fighting for all along. EQUAL rights granted by default to the "straights".

(1,753 posts)as he is hateful and wrong.
There is no such thing as "extra rights," all citizens have the same rights, seeking to defend those rights is not to ask for "more."

(455 posts)under existing protection laws, it is already in essence the subject of their own special laws through omission.
"All men are created equal... except those guys" defines the former group as having extra rights under the law.
It's really not all that difficult, but who would expect a neurosurgeon to understand basic logic. Or a citizen to know American history.
Frakin hateful morons.

I'd love to invite Dr. Carson to chat with us about what were one described as "special rights" for African Americans. . . .
He IS one of the stupidest EVER to be nominated for a cabinet post. . . .

(5,504 posts)We don't want to be fired, evicted, or worse just because of our orientation or gender. Is that too much to ask?
When did freedom from the above things become "extra?" We just want to live in peace without Jesus freaks demanding our death and destruction every five seconds.

(2,531 posts)Suppose I have a room to rent to a single or a couple, I get numerous inquiries and I pick one, somebody(s)' who were not picked were gay. Did I choose to discriminate? Was there any reason I needed to know which 'applicants' were gay, in advance of picking someone? Sometimes it is obvious, sometimes it is not, sometimes it is mistaken. I have been asked numerous times if I was gay; I am not and could care less if people think I am. (However, I do find it a weird question for casual conversation.)
Equal rights have sometimes been morphed into Special Rights on many occasions, whether intention was proven or not.
For the record I would happily rent to a gay couple whether male or female, but might in general be more comfortable renting to females, is that also discrimination?
And I do fear perverted men entering the women's room for nefarious purposes, completely a separate issue from sexual orientation. I fear mostly for the little girls.
