"My confidence has been shook": Dems furious after meeting with James Comey - but they can't say why

House Democrats walked out of a classified briefing sputtering with anger over FBI Director James Comeys response to claims of Russian election hacking.
Several of the lawmakers who took part in Fridays meeting said theyd lost confidence in Comey and had become convinced hes unfit to lead the agency, reported The Hill.
I was non-judgmental until the last 15 minutes, said Rep. Tim Walz (D-MN). I no longer have that confidence in him. Some of the things that were revealed in this classified briefing my confidence has been shook.
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said he was extremely concerned about what had been revealed, which was confidential.
Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) was so shaken by what hed learned that he could barely complete a sentence. Ill just Im very angry, Takano said.

I'm still an extreme proponent of his, despite that flaw - specifically his intent to let the TPP go through, and not doing *anything* about the many crimes committed during the Bush-Cheney years.

(31,235 posts)for Obama TWICE. We knew what we were getting then, and I don't want him to change because some dude on the internet has a sad. As Michelle Obama said, 'the presidency doesn't change who you are, it magnifies it'. And what Barack Hussein Obama is, is a student and professor of the Constitution of these United States. Get over yourself.
DeminPennswoods
(15,286 posts)I voted for Obama twice because I believed him when he talked about hope and change. I've been disappointed, tbh, in his entire 8 years. He simply failed to fight for much at all until the very end of his 2nd term. He needed a shove from Josh Marshall to abandon his planned COLA cuts to social security and from Nancy Pelosi on the ACA. Otherwise, he'd have happily compromised with Republicans on the COLA and let the universal health care dream die. That discussion is for another day, though.
Anyway, what I think Obama owed, and still owes, all Americans is a clear explanation of everything that happened during the election concerning Russian interference. It was reported in the press, can't recall where I read/heard it, that Obama himself said the reason he didn't do more to tell Americans what Russia was doing was because he didn't want to influence the election. Imagine, a president thinking it's more important not to be seen as "helping" his party's candidate than to address the nation, as President, that a foreign country was trying to hijack our election process. I'll add he was concerned enough about it to pick up the "red phone" and call Putin. So why not tell America? Sure, there would've been plenty of people/rw media complaining of him trying to tip the election, but the seriousness of the crime demanded a serious address to the nation.
Tarheel_Dem
(31,235 posts)"disappointed". I can set my clock by you guys. There are some things that Obama and Democrats have been called on by the "activists" to do these past eight years that have come back to bite us all in the ass; getting rid of the 60 vote threshold being one of them.
I don't much care that you're disappointed. Those of us who actually voted for him twice, and would gladly do so again, knew exactly what we were getting, and are very proud of our two term president as he leaves office. It sounds like you prefer an honorable man behave like the buffoon who will soon be sworn in. That's not who Barack Obama is, and never will be. He has a duty to the constitution before any political party, and you'll be missing that characteristic in the very near future.

I had a REALLY bad feeling about it THEN, and look what's happened to our country as a result of Comey's meddling into the election. Still more respect and admiration etc., for President Obama. (7,432 posts)Here's my guess: Comey offered an opinion that contained his political bias, and used that bias as justification for slanting his presentation of the email case. He's an unabashed Republican/Trump backer who took it upon himself to mess with the election AS A MATTER OF (MISGUIDED, CORRUPT) "MORAL" RECTITUDE.
Usually, politicians leave themselves lots of room to equivocate. That didn't happen this time, and the logic of the situation points toward Comey being arrogant and unapologetic about his interference. That's likely why some of those who witnessed the meeting left with such anger on their faces.

(90,714 posts)...taking yet another opportunity to say how much they voted for Obama but how they have a sad over his innumerable "failures" and are now furious because of the latest Republican outrage. Last month they were furious that he went on a family vacation to the US state where he was born, where the sun was shining on the flowers, because that meant he had already "handed the keys of the White House over to Trump," and it was "bad optics."
Et tu, Brute?
Meanwhile, very quietly and without fanfare, he is signing something into law every single day even while on vacay (afaict), commuting US prisoners' sentences, and trying like hell to get the last men out of Guantanamo (other countries have to agree to take them; he can't just put them on a boat). Some of the EOs he is signing will be overturned; a bunch more will be very hard to overturn; and at least one of them cannot be overturned. That last had to do with invoking the 1953 law about permanently voiding unused oil leases on the Continental Shelf.
So what else is Obama up to? Is he up to no good because you and I can't see everything? Both Obama and Biden, when asked about the full measure of retaliation against Russia, have commented that they hope we never find out. Biden smiled.

(2,596 posts)When a professional politician (most of whom are lawyers who have argued cases before the bench, FFS!) can't complete a sentence coherently because they're so shaken by what they've been briefed with, it renders me horrified and deeply alarmed.
We're all seriously fucked here, folks. This is bad on a level I don't think we've ever experienced in the last hundred years or more. This is bad approaching a level that the poor GIs faced when entering Auschwitz for the first time or walking in the nuclear debris following Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These guys had seen and been through their own personal hell during the conflict, but what they saw was nightmarish beyond description (based on personal observations made by my own father and uncles). Again, when members of congress are so shaken to their core, you know that this briefing contained information that they themselves had never thought imaginable in a president-elect, and the prospect of this abomination actually taking office next week must scare the shit out of them. God knows it scares the shit out of me! And I don't think there's anything for it either! The goddamn rethugs are certainly not going to lift a finger to do anything about it, you know that everyone, right?
Texin
(2,596 posts)It's from back in October (and it's linked in a tweet from DC a little earlier today). He's been talking about this since October. The British intelligence officer (retired MI6) who did the report actually handed off the report to the FBI (which was commissioned by a rethug candidate who has since been identified as Jeb Bush - and no wonder the Bush family didn't back this orange sack of shit, I mean Pappy was the director of the CIA for fuck's sake!). I can't recall if the former agent handed his report directly to Comey or someone the agent was familiar with within the agency or not. This article itself is enough to raise the hairs on your neck, but combined with the allegations of the golden showers from earlier this week, it's absolutely terrifying and outrageous.
I find myself sometimes struggling to complete a coherent sentence when confronted with some fresh outrage reported about or said by this abomination. In DC's article, the agent said he was forced to call the FBI contact to inquire about what if anything was being done about this information because he was growing more and more concerned. Turns out Comey was sitting on it whilst he lowered the boom on HC and Dems ten days before the ... I refuse to call this an election. More like an installation to be followed by a coronation.
Comey should be fired. Forcing him to "resign" is too good for him. He and Trump both, along with all their Russian handlers should be rounded up and given the choice between a firing squad or a public hanging. They are traitors of the first magnitude.
I shudder to contemplate anything else that might be in that report that would render a politician momentarily unable to form a coherent statement (like Takana of California). I can't say that I haven't been rendered teeth-chatteringly mute at what I keep hearing about and from these throwback to the Stalin era.

The FBI chief was grilled over and over again, according to the source, about his standards for acknowledging FBI investigations, with legislators repeatedly bringing up Comeys dramatic public confirmation that the bureau was revisiting classification issues with Hillary Clintons private email server days before the election, as well as his summer press conference announcing that he would not seek indictment."

Comey needs to go. His choice of how. Of all the news items that surfaced in October, he sat on dRump negatives. Yet, he had to say something about Madam Clinton. If the AG recused herself, who were his advisers on this issue. There was some kind of high level briefing in October. Did he receive some kind of advice/implication of action from those participants? Was not mitch and paul in those high level meetings?
dRump has some kind of business relationship with the Russian oligarch companies. Of which Putin is a shareholder. In my opinion, the Russians have him by the short hairs. Everything I see, hear, and read is he could care less about any citizen of these United States and territories.
Some might say let him stay if he discloses the details of his Russian business details. At this point, I don't care, because something else will come up.
