South Dakota GOP Rushes To Repeal Ethics Reforms Passed By Voters
Source: MSN/Huffington Post
WASHINGTON ― Republican lawmakers in South Dakota are ready to declare a legislative emergency so that they quickly and completely wipe out an ethics and campaign finance reform law adopted by popular vote in November.
The measure, known as IM-22, passed with 52 percent of the vote. It is supposed to create an independent commission to oversee investigations into ethical misconduct by elected officials, impose tougher limits on campaign contributions and lobbyists gifts to lawmakers, place restrictions on lawmakers becoming lobbyists, increase disclosure by independent political groups, and set up a system to publicly finance elections.
Republican lawmakers from Gov. Dennis Daugaard to state Senate Majority Leader Blake Curd came out against the initiative before the election. The opposition was heavily funded by the South Dakota chapter of Americans for Prosperity, the largest advocacy arm of the conservative political machine run by the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch.
After its passage, Daugaard called the law a mess and claimed that voters were hoodwinked by out-of-state actors. He vowed to repeal it if it wasnt struck down in the courts. Curd called the passage of the law a constitutional crisis in our state because, he said, it makes de-facto criminals out of every elected office holder and gives those officials only two choices: resign the office and abandon the voters or remain and commit a crime.

(2,037 posts)This good run the GOP has had since 2010 has emboldened them, made them feel even more entitled. Given the kind of people they are, that inevitably leads to overreach and of corruption of all kinds.
I'm not sure about South Dakota; but that's definitely the kind of arrogance that will do King Con in - probably sooner rather than later.

(3,077 posts)... Sen. John Thune, R-SD, quietly, without notifying any Spearfish area residents, put forth this swap deal. Mikey Rounds, R-SD and Krissy Noem, Rep. South Dakota both endorsed this deal.
"Funny that conservatives like John Thune would support creating a law where one is not needed. But predictable that South Dakota Republicans would try to get something from Uncle Sam without paying South Dakotas fair share. Im willing to guess that if the federal government decided to sell the 1,468 acres included in S. 3254 in Spearfish Canyon (not to mention the 524 federal acres South Dakota wants around Bismarck Lake to expand Custer State Park), it would get a lot more bids from wealthy folks whod like to build swanky vacation hideaways than from ranchers whod like to run their cattle up and down the crumbly cliffs. Valuing the federal land South Dakota wants to acquire at agricultural rates likely gives that land less value than the free market would."

(24,726 posts)he is just like John McCain, when it came to the sacred land down in Arizona, that the Navajo wanted protected.
Thune and this crowd keep forgetting that the Black Hills are sacred land and under the treaties 1846, 1876, and are to be treated as such, Custer State Park is part of the Black Hills and the Needles section of that Mountains .
And to jump over to Pine Ridge, what exactly has he done for the Indigenous People on the reservation, it has the highest per capital unemployment rate in the country, highest poverty rate in the country, white men can go on the reservation and rape woman without repercussions, there are no jobs, they have tried to disenfranchise the people from voting. What has Thune done---------------nothing.
I use to live in Rapid City, when I was younger near Stevens Creek, and my Cherokee mother and I would go out to the reservation to donate clothes and food, and if people in this "country" went out there on the Pine Ridge, just maybe they would see a correlation of how men like Thune and McCain, treat Indigenous People and how it is related to this country and themselves, these two and many other fascists should be fired.
