A slightly more subdued Trump faces the media

By Kevin Liptak, CNN White House Producer

Updated 4:48 PM ET, Fri January 27, 2017

Washington (CNN) — President Donald Trump used his first White House news conference Friday to say he is open to a warmer relationship with Russia and believes torture works as an interrogation technique, in a performance less confrontational than other recent media appearances.

Standing alongside British Prime Minister Theresa May in the White House East Room, Trump wouldn't say whether he was planning to lift sanctions on Moscow ahead of a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday. Nor would he outwardly affirm his support for NATO.

Compared to his pre-inauguration news conference in New York, Trump answered questions on his foreign policy prescriptions with uncharacteristic caution. During each answer, Trump stopped himself after only a few minutes, moved little beyond what he's said previously, and displayed none of the brashness that became his hallmark on the campaign trail.

Asked about the return of waterboarding for suspected terrorists, Trump declared the torture technique works. But he said he would allow his Defense Secretary James Mattis to "override" him on torture, an issue where the two men fundamentally disagree.

Do you really think he's going to suddenly change? A bombastic, bloviating, narcissistic spoiled brat is who he is and has always been. Sure, he can be "slightly more subdued" for a few minutes, but he's shown over and over he can't keep it up. He's STILL obsessing about the low inauguration crowds; he can't stand anything that's even slightly critical of him.

today's press conference would be considered deeply destabilizing and worrisome in a myriad of ways.

For Gump, we call it "Friday".

He'll be back to his old self on twitter tonight.

Or they sprinkled Thorazine on his Wheaties. It won't last, of course, because those are only temporary fixes. This is a deeply flawed man with the attention span of a gnat. So he will continue to embarrass himself AND the United States since he is our face to the world. I predict many more episodes that make us cringe and the rest of the world despise him all the more.

Can't wait for him to go dine with Queen Elizabeth. It is reported the Brits are planning a special welcoming party for him. For a guy who claims to be loved by millions....he is in for a rude awakening.
