Uber CEO commits to giving $3 million to help immigrants after #DeleteUber
Source: WJLA
WASHINGTON (ABC7) Uber found itself in hot water on two fronts related to President Donald Trump's temporary ban on immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries: for allegedly exploiting a taxi protest against the ban and for CEO Travis Kalanick's relationship with Trump.
Kalanick said in a Facebook post that the 90-day ban could hurt "thousands" of Uber drivers and he will raise his concerns directly with the president during a Friday business advisory group meeting in Washington. But the co-founder of the ride-sharing service is being criticized for agreeing to sit on the advisory panel. Twitter users are encouraging riders to #DeleteUber.
Kalanick defended his participation on Trump's panel in his Saturday Facebook post, saying he joined out of the "belief that by speaking up and engaging we can make a difference."
On Sunday, after #DelteUber exploded over social media, Kalanick posted an email to Uber's website pledging to help drivers impacted by President Donald Trump's travel ban by compensating lost earnings and creating a $3 million legal defense fund - among other things.

(5,170 posts)misclassifying workers as "independent contractors" and making loans to it misclassified employees at usurious rates, then I might consider feeling sorry this company. Until then it can fuck off.

(10,749 posts)Uber has raised billions, and articles have questioned the seemingly never ending fund raising. In any case, $3 million is pocket change to Uber and to Kalanick. Contribute some real money and commit to something akin to unionizing drivers, many of whom are immigrants and refugees (that's an assumption, but a reasonable one), and then I'll rethink my attitude. Until then, fuck 'em.

(5,170 posts)I am so sick of having to explain why labor unions are vital to any hope of vibrant and effective left. There is no suck thing as a "kinder, gentler" fucking over of the working class, but that is what Silicon Valley is selling and millions of Democrats seem to be buying. Sad.
