Israeli police begin forced removals of Amona settlers in the West Bank

AMONA, West Bank — Security forces hauled away defiant Israeli settlers Wednesday amid a final showdown at a hardscrabble Israeli settlement that the supreme court has deemed illegal because it was built on privately owned Palestinian land.

The razing of Amona and the eviction of its 40 families has been more than a decade in the making. It also underscored the political challenges for Israeli leaders who count on the support of settlers and plan to further expand the Israeli footprint in the West Bank.

By the afternoon, Israeli security forces had removed several families from their homes and arrested a handful of activists that had turned out to support the residents. Later, police began pulling away people who refused to their homes.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said at least 15 police officers had been lightly injured in scuffles with settlers and their supporters

They'll get no credit for it and the last time they removed settlers (from gaza) all they got was more rocket attacks and violence.
