GOP lawmaker withdraws bill to sell federal land

A Republican lawmaker is rescinding his bill to sell off millions of acres of federally owned land.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) announced late Wednesday night on Instagram that he would pull the legislation after backlash from conservation and sportsmens groups.

The bill would have disposed of small parcels of lands Pres. Clinton identified as serving no public purpose but groups I support and care about fear it sends the wrong message, he wrote, adding that the legislation dies tomorrow.
The Disposal of Excess Federal Lands Act called for the sale of 3.3 million acres currently owned by the Interior Departments Bureau of Land Management in 10 western states. Chaffetz introduced it Jan. 24, just over a week before committed to withdrawing it, and he or other legislators had introduced it in previous congressional sessions.
The long overdue disposal of excess federal lands will free up resources for the federal government while providing much-needed opportunities for economic development in struggling rural communities, Chaffetz said in a statement at the time.

(991 posts)EVERY day pick one of their bonehead bills or ideas and CALL!
Call both of your Senators and your Congressional Representative. Then add the appropriate committee chair and ranking Democratic member the committee. Try for Ryan, McConnell, Pelosi and Schumer (phones usually very busy).

(7,300 posts)This is also an example of an issue the large majority of US citizens agree. I still believe we all agree on more than we don't. The big challenge is reversing 40 years of RW brain washing and convince "conservatives" that liberals are not the Devil or Enemy Number 2 (After Fake News!!!!) and be able to come to sane solutions for issues that we don't agree on.

(10,048 posts)Progressive environmentalists have much in common with conservative outdoorsmen/women. While we do not agree on everything, we need more of this collabation to work towards common goals. We came together to protect public access to BLM lands, now we should try to come together to protect the environment. Conservative fishing, hunting, and outdoor recreation enthusiasts need viable ecosystems free from pollution and major degradation. We now need to come together to protect the EPA.

(22,671 posts)It won't matter that this was all orchestrated by Rethugs and they'll introduce such legislation again, the next time people aren't looking. It's always forgive and forget when it comes to their favored Rethug party. But had a democrat introduced such draconian legislation, which they never would, the democratic brand would be, in their minds, scared for life!
It's important to remember that Chaffetz is an Oath Keeper who does not recognize the government he's a part of as the highest authority in the country. To his group of Bundy loving Oath Keepers, it's the sheriff, as outlined in House Resolution 621 2017/2018.
Its time to get rid of the BLM and US Forest Service police. If there is a problem your local sheriff is the first and best line of defense." - Jason Chaffetz - Republican - U.S. Congressman
