Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said on Thursday he hoped to have a wall along the southern U.S. border with Mexico finished within two years, according to an interview with Fox News.
"The wall will be built where it's needed first, and then it will be filled in. That's the way I look at it," Kelly said in the interview. "I really hope to have it done within the next two years." He added he thought funding from Congress for the massive project would come "relatively quickly."

(16,093 posts)Former Marine General John Kelly...looks like another closet fascist! Some of these former generals are nothing more then puffed up, unqualified hacks...Flynn, Mattis, Kelly...what an embarrassment!
None of these men ever loved this country, not as much as they loved their over rated abilities...
This wall is as useful as teats on a boar hog

drug cartels can build tunnels like no one's business, they tunneled El Chapo out of prison...this wall is going to do nothing and help no one except those that supply the materials, it is the stupidest thing ever. moving all the factories to China after NAFTA had given so many people in Mexico stability is the straw that broke the camel's back and turned Mexico into a failed state. A wall is just another obstacle for to get around and get around it they will.

(10,279 posts)their Ag policy: "Get Big or Get Out" (of farming). NAFTA has in similar fashion, thanks to the US's mega-farmers selling cheap corn into Mexico, destroyed the Mexican small family farms. Millions of Mexicans were forced off their farms, and their properties were aggregated into mega-farms. Having no homes and no jobs, the natural outcome is migration toward available jobs in urban Mexican cities and the USA. Want to reduce the flow of migrants from Mexico? Return both USA and MEX to small family farms.

(531 posts)but on the downlow I think that is the only conceivable means of survival in the long run, I am learning how to compost right now so I can start growing my own vegetables...I think more people than the gov't is aware of are going back to subsistence means of getting by because we trusted the gov't and so many people lost so much...it just doesn't work.

Seriously, why are we spending $20 billion to "fill in" bits where the wall isn't needed? Aesthetics?

(6,241 posts)Good thing every other problem in the US has been solved, so we can allocate this huge amount of money toward the wall.
Glad every family has a roof over their heads.
Glad every child has a good education, and food security.
Glad the roads have been fixed, and crumbling bridges have been upgraded.
Glad veterans have all of their healthcare taken care of, so that $20 billion isn't needed there.

(20,213 posts)Our new police chief in Houston, Art Acevedo, was talking about it on the radio yesterday. As long as there are jobs, they will come. He said that if they truly wanted to get rid of undocumented workers they would come down HARD on the people and companies who hire them. No one, at least not on the right, ever suggests doing that.
He also said that while they will certainly arrest undocumented people who have committed a crime, that they will not be checking for legal status because even if they did, it only a misdemeanor with a small civil penalty. He said his job was first and foremost to keep Houston SAFE and part of that is to have a good working relationship with the Latino community.
He said if the feds want to enforce immigration laws, they can spend the money and hire the staff to do so, but that "HPD has more important things to do".
