The United States has placed a Navy destroyer off the coast of Yemen to protect waterways from Houthi militia aligned with Iran, two U.S. officials said on Friday, amid heightened tension between Washington and Tehran.
The USS Cole arrived in the vicinity of the Bab al-Mandab Strait off southwestern Yemen where it will carry out patrols including escorting vessels, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Earlier this week the armed Houthi movement attacked a Saudi warship off the western coast of Yemen, causing an explosion that killed two crew members.

(14,105 posts)The USS Cole bombing was a terrorist attack against the United States Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG-67) on 12 October 2000, while it was being refueled in Yemen's Aden harbor. Seventeen American sailors were killed and 39 injured[1] in the deadliest attack against a United States naval vessel since 1987.
The terrorist organization al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack. A U.S. judge has held Sudan liable for the attack, while another has released over $13 million in Sudanese frozen assets to the relatives of those killed. The United States Navy has reconsidered their rules of engagement in response to this attack.

However, there are probably terrified sailors on that ship; we can be a superstitious bunch...
There's a reason that ships get reputations they can't shake. In those situations, people will constantly see patterns of conditions and situations onboard that, while they're usually correctable, seem to occur more often on those certain ships than others, or chronic poor crew morale cannot seem to change, even if everyone is kicked off the ship (usually during a dry-docked overhaul) and an entirely new crew is assigned and takes over.
Over my career, I've known of three ships that started off with bad luck or a bad crew, couldn't shake the reputation, and ended up de-commissioned and sold off to other Navies before even half their estimated in-service lifetime had been completed.
There are other ships around the Horn and in the Persian Gulf/Indian Ocean. If TPTB were going to send a ship to make a statement, honestly as someone who was stationed on Navy ships, I'd prefer another one be sent to sit in the Horn of Africa off Yemen.
