JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) Republican Gov. Eric Greitens is about to make Missouri the 28th state to ban mandatory union fees
Greitens plans to sign the right-to-work bill into law Monday then travel around the state announcing his support for the measure. The governor had pledged to sign right to work while on the campaign trail. He and other supporters say it will bring business and jobs to the state. Opponents say it aims to weaken unions and could lead to lower wages.
Seven of the eight states that surround Missouri already have right-to-work laws, including Kentucky where it passed last month. New Hampshire lawmakers are considering a similar proposal.
Missouris new law will take effect Aug. 28. It exempts contracts in place before then until they expire or are reopened.

(74 posts)The election system we have in this state is openly called a "man in the middle" system. As I understand it, there's only one reason for that -- so Republicans can steal elections. AND ANOTHER THING -- when the GOP-controlled legislature was debating this shitty measure, the democrats tried to get an addition to it that would have had a statewide election to decide it. Since the statewide populace has voted down "right-to-work", at least once since I can remember, the republican majority didn't go for that. Anything to hurt the working class.

(4,116 posts)when they had a tiny majority in house but not senate, but now that the Dems have majority in both house & senate, it won't make it this year even though we have a R horrible person governor.

(6,643 posts)Unions they couldn't get rid of because they were full of WWII vets. So lets go back to the 50s and create lots of unions all over the country.

(599 posts)The fact that working-class people fall for "right-to-work" philosophy is mystifying to me.

The GOP panders to a large proportion of its base by turning complicated concepts into simple narratives (and not worrying if those narratives are true). I can't decide if they're actually okay with the dichotomy between the truth and what they're peddling or if they don't see it. Either way, they're dangerous.
