Israel passes bill to seize private Palestinian land for Jewish settlements

Source: washington post

JERUSALEM — Israel’s parliament passed a contentious law late Monday that allows the state to seize land privately owned by Palestinians in the West Bank and grant the properties to Jewish settlements for their exclusive use.

The measure is designed to protect homes in Jewish settlements, built on private Palestinian property “in good faith or at the state’s instruction,” from possible court-ordered evacuation and demolition.

Thousands of homes in dozens of settlements and outposts may now be protected, at least temporarily. The bill is likely headed for a high court challenge.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supports the legislation and has told his constituents that no government had done more for the settlers. On Monday, the Israeli leader said he had informed the Trump White House that a vote on the legislation was imminent.

Israeli legislators in the opposition condemned the bill as reckless and warned that it would turn the world against Israel while goading prosecutors at the International Criminal Court in The Hague to take action against the Jewish state.

How can it be even remotely legal to seize private property owned by one group to give it to another group! If the Israelis need to increase settlements, they could go to the edges of the desert, which is where they planned years ago to send the residents of Gaza so they could take over that space. That plot failed from objections that there was no access to water. The Israelies did not care but eventually backed down. Their goal is to have a one-state solution by expelling every last Palestinian in the area. The United Nations and world leaders are right to object to actions such as this. I would like to see stronger objections.

and we are watching it happen. I wonder if Trump will follow suit with a "ethnic cleansing" all his own on Muslims in this country.

They allow settlers to build hundreds or thousands of houses on Palestinian land while the government says they're trying to figure out what to do about it. Then they wait until the settlements are "too big to fail," to put it in American terms, and bless the whole thing retroactively. If I were a cynical person, I might think they planned it that way from the beginning.

So, any consequences that flow to Israel and its viability are self-inflicted.

The US will have to think long and hard about "selling" weapons to Israel or giving them so much money. He is as insane as BLOTUS.

out how to implement a one-state solution such that it complies with basic human rights law, i.e. gives rise to a single bi-national state that protects the rights of all citizens equally.

Netanyahu doesn't want a bi-national state and neither do those that support this new law! I don't see any compliance with basic human rights occurring, mainly because the US, especially now, might just rubber stamp everything that the Israeli government wants to do.

Netanyahu and the conservative Israelis only want a single national state, where the Palestinians reside on the sidelines with whatever rights they are allowed to have!

They must be tempted to seize a mile or two along the Gaza/Egypt border.
