Texas tries new anti-abortion strategy after high court loss

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, ASSOCIATED PRESS

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The long, bitter battle over Texas’ new efforts to further restrict abortion has begun in the Republican-controlled Legislature.

Top conservatives have shifted strategy from offering past legislation they say protected women’s health to instead saying they’re safeguarding fetuses. The change comes after the U.S. Supreme Court last summer voided much of Texas tough, past abortion limits.

One bill being heard Wednesday by a Senate committee would mostly ban a commonly used second-trimester abortion procedure, “dilation and evacuation.” Federal courts have blocked similar bans in four other states. Another major proposal requires burying or cremating fetal remains. A Texas health department rule doing the same thing already was blocked in federal court.

A third proposal bans donating fetal tissue after the 2015 release of secretly recorded videos from Planned Parenthood clinics.

Makes me sick. Texas has some REAL problems that need addressing badly. Yet the entire Republican legislature is fixated on taking away women's rights.

They are not pro-life. There is nothing in these policies that support life- they simply turn women into unwilling incubators.

Young women have finally realized that the rights they have taken for granted are in jeopardy. That's why the Women's March in Austin had over 50,000 protesters, and sister marches around the country far exceeded expectations. It will take a few elections, but we can take back our country from the Republicans who are out to destroy it. Unfortunately, electing Democrats will have to be done by grass-roots efforts alone--the national party seems to focus only on raising money and supporting itself. I sent an email to the DNC yesterday saying that they had seen my last donation until they make changes and start helping to support Democratic candidates at all governing levels.

8. Why can't they let this go? Seriously, someone needs to ask them that.

I've recently gotten into two (relatively civilized) discussions with friends of friends on Facebook about abortion and how the rates are currently the lowest they've ever been. In both cases, I've said to them directly, "why are you so fixated on this?"

Each time they simply faded away, end of argument. I feel as if someone would just stand up on the floor and ask them something along those lines, well, maybe it wouldn't make a difference in Texas, but at least they could have to answer on why this is so worth pursuing when the success rate of lowering abortions is currently high.
