Muhammad Alis Son Detained for Hours at Florida Airport by Immigration: Reports

Muhammad Ali Jr., son of the legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali, was detained by immigration officials at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for hours on Feb. 7, according to several reports.

Ali Jr., 44, was traveling with his mother, Khalilah Camacho-Ali, to Florida from a speaking engagement in Montego Bay, Jamaica, according to the Courier-Journal.

Keith E. Smith, a spokesman for the Florida division of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, declined to comment on the incident, writing in a statement to PEOPLE: “Due to the restrictions of the Privacy Act, U.S. Customs and Border Protection cannot discuss individual travelers; however, all international travelers arriving in the U.S. are subject to CBP inspection.”

The Courier-Journal reported that the Alis were taken aside because of their “Arabic-sounding names,” according to their family friend and lawyer, Chris Mancini, who spoke to the outlet.

7. It's awesome to see all these protests!

Something struck me when I saw how many there are.. my first thought was, how are SO many people going to make it to all of these worthy protests? I wonder if they all got together and marched, how many people would that be? Would that be more effective? Less effective? Is it better to spread it out with less numbers at each protest, than everyone protesting all together?

It's like what I've been thinking about for a couple of weeks now...

Every issue is SO important, but HOW WILL ANY OF IT MATTER --- IF - the media continues to allow lies on their watch.. and also in 2018, our votes are hacked once again, along with voter suppression, Crosscheck, re-districting, etc.??

Wouldn't ALL of these incredibly important issues be better served by a real media, to factually inform/ educate our public about these issues?

Where is the march for us not to have another interference of our elections?

I think it's phenomenal to watch citizens at town halls as we are seeing, telling the GOP to do their jobs or they'll be voted out... but I scream at the screen.. WILL THEY/CAN THEY BE VOTED OUT? What changed for us to believe in our vote???

I know this democracy is under it's most serious threat .. it's simply so frightening. I hope what we all are doing and how we are doing it is enough, and done in time before perhaps we can't do anything about it.

When are the airlines going to speak up? How long before people start declining to fly because of all of the "papers please" hassles, even in flying domestically?

Travel into the US has sharply declined, according to a travel and tourist organization report. There are threads in that here on DU.

I haven't seen any figures about domestic airline travel, but I imagine that many people are thinking twice about making optional travel on airlines. Many people are nervous enough about air travel.

This happened to a friend of mine recently whose family has been in America centuries longer than the Trumps. They rejected their slave names and took African names, so of course they must be dirty foreigners trying to sneak into where they don't belong. Their fake accents and documents aren't fooling anyone who knows what an American looks like.

8. This is the irony of it

The ones most pushing for gestapo tactics are those who are 1st or 2nd generation "off the boaters" often coming from countries that carried out those very practices. I.e., in some cases, these people's families fled this sort of thing yet they go on and try to implement it here anyway.

Meanwhile whole swaths of people who were here before Ellis Island was built, before the Civil War, and even before or while the country was still nothing but a pile of colonies, yet they are attacked as "not American" and told to "go back" to somewhere.
