The young man who is in custody after allegedly gunning down 12 people in a mass shooting spree overnight in Aurora, Colorado has been identified as local resident James Holmes, according to federal authorities.
Law enforcement officials and witnesses told ABC News Holmes wore what appeared to be a bullet-proof vest and riot-type mask as he opened fire in a movie theater with three weapons at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." In addition to the 12 deaths, at least 50 people were injured, according to police.
Local news reports showed aerial video of police cautiously searching Holmes' apartment, some five miles from the Century Aurora 16 theater, as the suspect reportedly told police he had explosives inside.

A law enforcement source told Orr that Holmes' residence was "booby-trapped," and that police saw what looked like "buckets of extra ammunition" and some kind of chemical inside his home.
The suspect spoke of "possible explosives in his residence. We are dealing with that potential threat," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates told reporters at a news conference.

(1,418 posts)how many extremist websites has this guy been posting to and for how long?
valerief
(53,235 posts)Iggy
(1,418 posts)I think it's very easy to formulate about a 6-7 point checklist which would enable law enforcement to
distinguish between hotheaded loudmouths (i.e. most teabaggers) and nuts with some sort
of ax to grind-- who are also armed-- and STOP these people bfore they kill
randome
(34,845 posts)That can't be done.
Iggy
(1,418 posts)in the effort to find and stop terrorists; you realize this, correct?
First, do you/we actually want to at least slow this problem down or not? do you want to be gunned down going
to a movie.. or maybe the gas station?
it's relatively simple to narrow this down: surveil the extremist websites in the U.S. which in fact are already
be watched by law enforcement. true, not _all_ of the nuts are on these websites, but based on what we
are seeing- many of them are.
http://www.aclu.org/spy-files
randome
(34,845 posts)Yes, I know there is probably a lot of law enforcement monitoring going on. But it will never be enough. You can't check the daily information content of 300 million people.
The conditions that led to this massacre are where we need to focus our efforts. Sadly, that has never been done in the past so I doubt it will occur now.
Iggy
(1,418 posts)300 million people are not on the extremist websites... if they are, we're in trouble!!
by extremist websites, I mean the "white power", white supremicist websites, the sites talking
about "overthrowing our gov't. those sorts of websites.
The Southern Poverty Law Center proved long ago that activity on these websites can be
and must be monitored.
again, do you want to resolve this obv massive problem? or is the status quo working for you?
randome
(34,845 posts)But since that will never happen in this country, we need to look at what created the conditions for this massacre to occur.
I'm not sure you have defined 'extremist' websites by calling them 'white power' or 'white supremicist' websites because I don't see how those can be defined, either, except when the sites are so far 'out there' that a reasonable person would not disagree.
Free Republic frequently talks about 'overthrowing our gov't'. But I would not advocate a visit from law enforcement every time someone posts something stupid there.
Iggy
(1,418 posts)so let's focus on _realistic_ strategy.
OK, you're choosing NOT to get it regarding white power, white supremacist, neo nazi type websites. they are definitely
out there, and they are trackable
if you're going to be intentionally obtusive and contrary, I don't have time to waste talking with you

I'm speaking from personal experience.
I'm an attorney, and with current S.Ct. precedents, I doubt that we'll see more strict regulation in the future. To move any closer to serious regulation, you'd need a court with at least 5 Ginsburgs and Sotomayors. That would require many consecutive Dem presidents, which would be a great thing, but it isn't the historical pattern.
I'm not a 2d Amendment purist, but I think that the Amendment presents a significant obstacle for serious gun control.
Really, if you want to go after guns, eventually you're going to have to amend the Constitution.

(1,644 posts)immediately after an incident, rather than waiting for facts to come in. Please recall; as it turned out, Jared Loughner(Gifford's assailant) turned out to be a radical pothead who was a political independent that hated G.W. Bush. A lone nutcase. Timothy McVeigh was a right-wing looney, and the Unabomber was a left-wing looney. There are such people on all sides of the political spectrum, an no sane person supports their actions. Besides, if we try to tie this guy to Romney or Limbaugh or the Tea Party, and later turn out to be wrong, we will look foolish, especially if a photo ever turns up of this kook shaking hands with President Obama or Al Gore or someone. It is possible, and we certainly could not blame them for his actions. Anyway, I think we should wait at least 24-48 hours for the facts to come in before we draw conclusions. The first reports on big incidents are ALWAYS wrong.

THe right's language of their talking heads is steeped in violence, and that's just their mainstream people. (2 posts)What we can see from the internet at first glance:
The Tea Party in Colorado has a page with Jim Holmes as a member.
The Aurora, CO Tea Party page (along with quite a few other pages) have no content, or don't exist - "The page you were looking for was not found."
Yet this page exists as a link on the Colorado Tea Party website. You can see here which pages have been pulled, look for "Aurora Tea Party (Aurora)" as the example.
Breibart is already blaming the mainstream MSM media derp and liberals for being just as bad as the shooter (you know: the same "how DARE they suggest there's a page on a real website with someone with the same name, and how DARE they look into it!" we got for months over Jim Adkisson, how he was an atheist who hated religion and that's why he did it, how he was a lone wolf and in no way held deeply felt right-wing sentiments, until the inconvenient truth of his motivations became known to the public).
That final link: look at the sources from 2008, the Adkisson incident. We're seeing the same lame-ass bluffs from the [f]right[ened] wing again.

Update: Fox News reports that the suspect has a California-issued social security number, as does the man in the documents obtained by Breitbart News--a significant correlation, assuming the sources are independent.
Furthermore, the James Holmes for whom records were obtained by Breitbart News registered as a Democrat on June 14, 2011. He registered from an address in La Plata County, Colorado, and his status is listed as "inactive."
