Bernie Sanders, Danny Glover: Union workers have it better

Source: Washington Post

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders stood with thousands at a pro-union rally near Nissan Motor Co.’s plant in Canton, Mississippi, congratulating workers for their courage “in standing up for justice.”

“It’s our job to tell corporate America that they cannot have it all,” Sanders told the crowd. “Start treating the working people of this country with respect and dignity!”

That comment drew a roar of approval from the crowd. Many held signs reading “Workers’ Rights = Civil Rights” and “We Deserve Better” as Sanders, actor Danny Glover, NAACP President Cornell Brooks and United Auto Workers President Dennis Williams made the case for union membership.

“If you are a member of a union in America, you are going to make 27 percent more than a non-union member. If you are a member of a union, you’re far more likely to have paid family and medical leave. If you are a member of a union, the likelihood is that you will have better health care and a better retirement plan than non-union members,” the former Democratic presidential candidate said.

relying on a company to do the right thing, after all if companies did the right thing then they would be paying their workers a wage that the worker could afford to pay all their bills and set aside 30% for retirement but the vast majority companies pay far below that.
Take Publix for example, its not union and while it pays somewhat better than alot of retailers it doesnt pay anywhere near enough for the average person to really save for a retirement unless they get into management.

Couldn't agree more. I worked there for 7 years, and was only able to amass maybe $7k in my 401(k). I have since been able to save 7x that in my current (union) job after only 4. Don't get me started on Publix. That's a different topic for a different day.

Very few unions in that category. And the manufacturing industry is still shrinking so...

The OCAW (Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers union) used to represent 90% of the refinery and chemical plant workers, now a small fraction. There are still many service unions, but they are weak. The thing is we could grow these unions and still increase wages in this country.

The problem is these workers are just as likely to support Republicans and watch Fox News. You can't fix stupid!

IT jobs are being shipped out of this country at a record pace...not just call center jobs but good paying professional jobs. For example IBM is now headquartered in India you know...and the ones that remain are busy filling out HIB visa forms...to get cheaper workers who are basically slaves....as firing them gets them deported.

pack up and move it cost money and when you re 50...maybe younger it gets way harder...Some I know are watching what they worked for their entire lives disappear at 50+. HIB visas are a bad idea...letting tech companies ship jobs overseas is bad as well...we really need as Democrats to address this.

Bernie is one of the few D's out there doing rallies for workers since November. You just have to look in the little MSM coverage. Perhaps you have some links to other D's doing this too?

Snip: Speakers at the event included Mayor Joe Hogsett, Rep. Andre Carson and Sens. Joe Donnelly and Bernie Sanders, who spoke to the rally via a pretaped video statement.

"We used to be a country which manufactured products, but in the last number of years, 60,000 manufacturing plants in this country have been shut down," Sanders said in the video. "That is a disaster."

Sanders also mentioned President Donald Trump's deal to save Carrier Corp.'s Indianapolis-based plant, which planned to close and move more than 1,000 jobs to Mexico.

"I will tell you that it is great that Donald Trump made a phone call to the CEO of United Technologies, but that is not a policy," Sanders said. "We're going to have to do a lot more than make phone calls to individual companies in order to rebuild manufacturing in America and create the millions of jobs that need to be created."

430 jobs and not given Trump credit he did not deserve. Anything that makes it look like Trump saved jobs is a problem...and this may shock you ...but many mid-western workers don't give a damn about unions...only jobs. Yes, it is short sighted but economic deprivation creates desperate people.

"What really happened: As our fact-checkers noted, the actual number of jobs being kept in the United States was about 730. Trump appears to have included in his figure 300 jobs that weren't being moved overseas. (This was the inflation that frustrated the local union leader whom Trump later criticized on Twitter.)"

"but many mid-western workers don't give a damn about unions...only jobs" Trump did very well in that same mid-west.

Coming away from one sentence from Bernie can be very misleading.

Again what other D's are out doing this? Maybe you should point to those staying home instead.

Bernie Sanders denounces Trump’s Carrier deal for “endangering the jobs of workers who were previously safe”

President-elect Donald Trump may be touting his deal with Carrier as a triumph for working-class Americans, but Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is hearing none of it.

“Today, about 1,000 Carrier workers and their families should be rejoicing,” Sanders wrote in a Thursday op-ed for The Washington Post. “But the rest of our nation’s workers should be very nervous.”

Sanders proceeded to point out what Salon’s Gary Legum had noticed earlier on Thursday — namely, that Trump’s deal saved fewer than half the manufacturing jobs that Carrier was planning to ship to the Mexican city of Monterrey and did so only by having Gov. Mike Pence (in his final weeks as Indiana leader) offer Carrier tax breaks that will cost Indiana $700,000 annually for an indefinite period.

Trump also seemed to promise that his planned tax and regulatory reforms will amount to more savings for Carrier.

We can do all the rallies we want...but we will get nothing until the Dems are back in power...I pray we don't get a national right to work bill nationally...the election of Trump was a disaster for working people and unions...and here in my area we see many layoffs...and no one even discusses it. We need as Democrats to come up with a reasonable manufacturing policy.
