Spicer Says Trump Is Still Under Audit, Won't Say Whether He'll Release Taxes

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump is still under audit and wouldn't say whether Trump will release his taxes for the current year.
"Will the President commit to releasing his tax returns for this year and is he still under audit for his past returns?" NBC News' Hallie Jackson asked Spicer during his daily briefing.
"My understanding is he's still under audit and I'll follow up on the question," Spicer replied.
Throughout his presidential campaign, Trump claimed that he could not release his tax returns because of an ongoing audit.

Spicer On Health Care Bill: 'We're Not Jamming This Down Anybody's Throat'
By MATT SHUHAM Published MARCH 7, 2017, 2:46 PM EDT
White House press secretary Sean Spicer emphasized that House Republicans' proposal to replace Obamacare would follow "regular order" and that we are not jamming this down anybodys throat.
This is the bill. Its right here. It's on the website. We are going through regular order, Spicer said, pointing to a stack of paper to his right. If you go to the House of Representatives' website, Speaker Paul Ryan's website, it's listed. Everybody can read it, and it's going to go through what they call regular order.
We are not jamming this down anybody's throat, he continued. It is going to go through a committee process. All parties involved, all representatives in the House will be able to have input into it. I think that's the way to conduct this process, is to do it to allow people to watch the process happen in the committees, allow members of Congress to have their input in it to make amendments, to see that we get the best bill that achieves the goal for the American people.
Regular order is a nebulous term, but Republicans in recent years have contrasted it to the process which led to the Affordable Care Act.

It's 12-15,000 pages. No one alive, no tax professional even, can comprehend its size complications and magnitude.

(47,586 posts)We should be able to see at least ten years of tax returns considering all his foreign business deals. One year would not be sufficient.

She said he abandoned the deal a month after the election,
but still pocketed the money he got.

no way in hell would the IRS had his taxes in audit by the end of the year ..... unless he has lied so many times that they just put him on automatic audit

(768 posts)I wonder if a reporter (or willing private citizen) could use the Freedom of Information Act to request a copy of the IRS letter sent to Trump informing him that he is under audit. To my knowledge no one has shown that evidence. No need at this time to see the taxes, just prove he is under audit. He is no longer a private citizen so he would not have that protection.
Any reporters or lawyers here to comment?

IRS probably has to assign several million dollars in our Federal employees just to keep up with his audits.

He should be required to show the letter.

(50,562 posts)The very rich (and also Donald Trump, whose riches rise and fall with the vagaries of the real estate market) are under permanent IRS audit - by their own personal IRS officers, who spend years familiarizing themselves with the unique nature of their assigned auditees.
If Trump is going to release his returns only when the audit is finished, expect to see them ten years after his death and burial in a prison cemetery somewhere.

Obama hosted the first "Healthcare Summit" on March 5, 2009
- http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/05/AR2009030501850.html
- http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/06/us/politics/06web-health.html
And from that point on, through other summits, multiple congressional committee meetings and legislative markups, dozens of CBO scores, tons of amendments, hours upon hours of debate, and votes on the resultant legislation, culminating in the signing of the final piece into law on March 23, 2010 - you can't get more "regular order" than that (over a year to get from point A to point B).

(2,120 posts)You can still release your taxes even if you're being audited! And while most normal people would say "Why is Trump being audited unless he's shady?" of course this is their way of crying victim as always; e.g. successfully brilliant businessman Trump is being picked on by the incompetent crooked government (and it was Obama's idea).
LiberalLovinLug
(14,176 posts)And on the IRS. Are THEY under some restriction about saying whether they are or aren't? I can understand maybe if they were auditing, to not have to admit it. But if they are not, then shouldn't they at least be able to confirm THAT?
