Senate revokes Obama federal land-planning rule

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday revoked a rule that aimed to give the public more input into federal land management decisions, the latest move by the Republican-led Congress to undo Obama administration environmental regulations it sees as a burden.
The Senate voted 51-48 to approve a resolution to repeal the Bureau of Land Managements Resource Management Planning rule, known as BLM 2.0, finalized in December by the Obama administration.
The rule updated the 30-year process the agency followed when developing land-use plans across the 245 million acres of federal land it manages.
Senators who voted to revoke the rule, such as Republican Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said it diluted local authority over decisions about how to use land for grazing, energy and mineral development and recreation, and gave outside voices an outsized say in local matters.

(12,673 posts)Prior to "BRAC", if a DoD base closed, the base was parceled out and lots sold individually at auction, so that an individual could potentially purchase a specific house or 1/2 - 1 acre lot to homestead along with the developer or business interest who would be able to purchase several conjoining lots for their particular plans. Most of the buildings were dilapidated and would have to be replaced, but typically the land was cheap and there was already some form of power/water/sewage infrastructure available to the lots where there had been buildings, so one could either put a manufactured home or build a custom home on the lot and would have a fairly comfortable place to live for not a lot of money. Several communities in 1960's/1970's Southern California had their start that way.
However, with BRAC, the auction would not be for small parcels, but for large lots - entire housing areas, entire building complexes, 100's of open acres at a time. And while these lots were not as expensive as the land around the base was, they certainly weren't affordable to the average person. I was actually looking to move for a new job that was in the area a BRAC was underway, and was looking to purchase a small lot as a homestead as my uncle had back in the '60's.
The curious thing I noticed about base closures in the 80's is that unlike earlier base closures, these bases always seemed to have had new or renovated military housing units, schools, roads, fire and police stations, and other base infrastructure...as if the DoD was "flipping" the base to be developer ready. Within a year or so after the base closed, a new suburb development complete with new retail and light industrial/office buildings was ready for lease along with "upgraded" home sales in its place.

(58,785 posts)take notice when the conservative sackers who were so foolishly given power inevitably used it to enrich their friends and themselves by taking and degrading our national treasures.
I wish we could serve notice loud and clear, though public displays of refusal, that we will take all these lands back and that those who take them now will be fortunate to get back any pittances spent on them, plus requirements to remediate any damages.

(18,124 posts)by these toilet dwelling pigs calling themselves human beings. Their racism at trying to dismantle the legacy of President Barack Hussein Obama is so hatefully racist. Well they can do their dirt, yet decent people know who was the best POTUS in modern times.
I feel history will be very kind to Obama, while these stupid clowns won't even be a footnote. Just a couple of lines pointing to their hateful racist actions that the whole world is seeing in action. All the nuclear bombs and the strongest armed forces in the world will not guarantee respect for these toilet dwelling bacteria, just fear and that is the danger of these toilet dwelling turds 'leading' ameriKKKa.

(4,973 posts)the same vile legacy as most of their repuglican predecessors. Can anyone remember a good repuglican administration? All the accolades about past and present repuglicans are always from sycophants on right wing hate radio and fux noooze brainwashing the average dolt listening to that crap. I hate to tell those dummies, but news isn't supposed to be left or right, it's supposed to be about facts. If the facts always sound leftist to you, then you're a brainwashed idiot. Wake up!
