Warren, Booker to address DC progressive event: report

Sens. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) and Cory Booker (N.J.) are among the big Democratic names speaking at an upcoming event for progressives in Washington, D.C., according to a new report.

Booker and Warren are confirmed for the May 16 Ideas Conference organized by the Center for American Progress (CAP) at Washington’s St. Regis Hotel, Politico said Wednesday.

Politico said other high-profile speakers include Democratic Sens. Kamala Harris (Calif.), Chris Murphy (Conn.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.).

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock (D) and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) are also slated to speak, Politico added, with more luminaries expected to attend.

Washington (CNN)New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker gave an impassioned and unprecedented plea to the Senate on Wednesday to vote against Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general and his fellow senator, Jeff Sessions.

Booker, civil rights legend Georgia Rep. John Lewis and Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Cedric Richmond each delivered emotional testimony that Sessions' record on civil rights disqualifies him from serving atop the Justice Department under President-elect Trump.

"The arc of the moral universe does not just naturally curve toward justice, we must bend it," Booker said. "America needs an attorney general who is resolute and determined to bend the arc. Sen. Sessions record does not speak to that desire, intention or will."

Booker became the first sitting senator to testify against a fellow sitting senator at a confirmation hearing for a Cabinet position. His panel with other lawmakers and supporters of Sessions was added to the hearings at the request of the top Democrat on the committee, California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, though Democrats criticized Chairman Chuck Grassley for scheduling the members of Congress at the end of all proceedings.

He and some Democrats with principles refused to sign on to a very flawed amendment that would have appeared to lend Dem support to a Rethug bill that didn't deserve it.

When his flawed amendment didn't pass, Bernie wrote a much better stand-alone bill and Booker did vote for that one.

I am sure if Bernie Sanders defended the dairy industry, some folks would also argue that he sold out, too. Just another Russia Today talking point to try to attack progressive Democrats from the "left."

Booker (D-N.J.) and Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Senate Democrats, agreed on drug importation legislation that both could support. The bill, which has 20 Senate Democratic sponsors, includes safety provisions that led to Booker's no vote in January.

"We have to bring down the prices of prescription drugs in our country," Booker said at a press conference with Sanders and Democratic members of both houses. "Safety provisions are critical elements in making importation work."

The new bill requires that imported drugs are made in a facility registered with the Food and Drug Administration, allows the Department of Health and Human Services to suspend drug imports if needed to protect public health, sets up a website to list certified online sellers, allows drugs to be imported from other countries that meet U.S. standards, requires English-language labeling, and funds the program through a yearly fee on foreign sellers.

The Pew Charitable Trusts also expressed concern with the legislation, saying that it would be "very difficult and potentially impossible" to keep out counterfeit drugs or those from facilities not under FDA supervision.
