Ryan: Health care plan must change to pass the House

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said Wednesday that his health care proposal must change to pass the House, marking a significant retreat from his earlier position that the carefully crafted legislation would fail if altered.
The shift came after a private meeting of House Republicans from which Ryan (R-Wis.) emerged to tell reporters that his proposal to revise the Affordable Care Act would incorporate feedback from the rank-and-file. Ryan attributed the change of strategy to the impact of an analysis issued Monday by the Congressional Budget Office. Among other details that prompted a fresh round of criticism of the proposal was a projection that 14 million fewer Americans would be insured after one year under the Republican plan.
Ryan backed away on Wednesday from his previous rhetoric of calling the measures fate a binary choice for Republican lawmakers.
Now that we have our score ... we can make some necessary improvements and refinements to the bill, he said, referring to the CBOs estimate of the impact on the number of those covered by health insurance and what the GOP proposal would cost.

(2,331 posts)If the house conservatives get their hands on it, it is DOA in the Senate. It is why Ryan tried the take it or leave it approach to begin with.

(2,331 posts)The only way they can pass it is by appeasing the hard right. If it goes to the Senate in that state it is dead on arrival.
Senators have to run state wide campaigns and aren't in the luxury of creative districts. When you have Tom Cotton of all people worried about people losing care you know they are in trouble.
Either way for democrats its good news. If they can pass anything they will have to appease the hard right which accelerates people losing coverage to a mid-term year instead of putting it off 4-5 years. I say this hoping nobody loses coverage and this goes down in flames but I'd prefer they accelerate it if they are going to pass it so that they lose bigly in 2018.

(10,497 posts)they could look at what is working in other countries and what health care truly costs per capita. We all would be pleasantly to surprised to say the least at how good and affordable it could be compared to the racket it has become!
I hope these butt wipes have nightmares for what they plan on doing to us. Some have zero conscience, but some will be haunted later! They will deserve every bit of it and more!

(5,057 posts)Even Dr. McCoy can't reserect this POS wealth distribution stunt hiding as a health care bill. Now watch them let the ACA crash from neglect. Their plan is to blame Democrats for everything - but they seem to have forgotten how that all worked out when they shut the government down. These are not smart people.

I call him sociopath, because even though he has been reviled for the last week, he shows absolutely no change in expression. He can't possibly possess a soul.

(1,204 posts)harder for many poor to middle-class to get real health care? We have some pretty twisted people in this country.
