President Trumps new budget would increase defense spending by $54 billion while slashing funding for medical research, climate science, public housing, education, aid to the indigent, infrastructure, and many, many other things.
On Thursday morning, the White Houses budget director Mick Mulvaney explained that these changes were inspired by one, simple question: Can we ask the taxpayer to pay for this?
When you start looking at places that we reduce spending, one of the questions we asked was, can we really continue to ask a coal miner in West Virginia or a single mom in Detroit to pay for these programs? The answer was no, Mulvaney told MSNBCs Morning Joe. We can ask them to pay for defense, and we will, but we cant ask them to continue to pay for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
This was a bizarre defense of the Trump budget for several reasons. To name just three:.........................

(8,445 posts)My husband, who voted for 45, just came in and asked me about this. I told him, yes, Meals on Wheels is just a "feel good" program. You know, like how it feels good for the recipients to have food in their bellies. Husband is finally wavering in support of 45, and I'm confident he'll see the error of his ways in voting for him very soon. He's starting to understand why I cried all election night when it became obvious that we lost EVERYTHING. I think I'm going to have a cap made for him. A red ball cap that says, "I WAS WRONG!" (Thankfully he never got himself a maga cap. I guess he knew better.)

(12,667 posts)Before Hitler started moving on Poland. War hadn't actually started, and the killing machine hadn't yet been turned on to provide the slave labor required to maintain the wartime construction and manufacturing; at that time, the camps were pretty much a mix of a dissident prison and internment camp.
Someplace to isolate and put the "undesirables" they didn't want in society while they were building their Aryan Volkland paradise.
After the Nazi army moved on Poland and England declared war, the Red Cross was no longer allowed to freely inspect; and certainly not film in the camps.

(783 posts)At the moment, there is no official number for the portly president-to-be, but the New York Times noted Trumps weight, as revealed during the Dr. Oz Show in September at 236 pounds, which was later revised to 267 pounds. At 6-foot-3, that gives Trump a body mass index (BMI) of 29.5 to 33.4.
However, no one really needs a medical report to see that Trump is fat; all you have to do is look at him. And judging by his double and triple chins, seems to be getting fatter.
Whether or not he catches up to Americas fattest president, William Howard Taft, remains to be seen. Taft tops the list, so far, at 340 pounds.
When Grover Cleveland took office as Americas 24th president, he packed 260 pounds on to his 5-foot-11-inch frame.
That means if Trump actually weighs 267 pounds, (or more) he comes in second on the fat presidents list. But who knows? By the time he leaves office, Trump might beat Taft, and win the title of fattest president in American history.

(22,651 posts)Charities apply for grant money every year, the money helps the charity have a stable base, they can feed millions more people. Charities like meals on wheels have volunteers cook and deliver the meals.
Republicans know if they CUT OFF THE LEGS of charities like MonW it will increase States spending on sick/malnourished people. Increase the spending on State emergency resources like police, fire department, hospitals by BILLIONS.
More income of LOCAL state money to LOCAL private for profit businesses isn't a good thing at all for any society.
guess those LOCAL tiny governments better dump their PAID mayors,PAID city council positions PAID police departments, PAID local courts with fabulous health insurance. cities won't be able to afford paid administration positions, volunteers will have to fill those positions. good luck finding people who will work for FREE in those jobs. They wanted Republicans and should know by now, Republicans never work for free.

(783 posts)Consider the example of Indiana Governor Mike Pence cutting the needle exchange program in Indiana. He should have known that would cause an increase in HIV. He did it anyway. Predictably, the HIV infection rate shot up. Eventually he relented, months later. Did he know the devastation he would cause? He could have known. He should have. The data was available. I think such people ignore information they have when reality doesn't agree with their preconceived views -- something we see a lot of these days. People can deny information that is plain to see; psychological literature is full of examples -- e.g., people shown a black Ace of Diamonds card will initially fail to recognize what they see (Their ability to recognize improves if they stare at it long enough).
Sample reference on the Indiana example (an article worth reading):
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/08/us/politics/mike-pence-needle-exchanges-indiana.html
. . . What was going on [in Scott County] was unprecedented in Indiana and rare in the United States: H.I.V. was spreading with terrifying speed among intravenous drug users in this rural community near the Kentucky border. Local, state and federal health officials were urging the governor to allow clean needles to be distributed to slow the outbreak.
But Indiana law made it illegal to possess a syringe without a prescription. And Mr. Pence, a steadfast conservative, was morally opposed to needle exchanges on the grounds that they supported drug abuse.
. . . more than two months after the outbreak was detected, Mr. Pence said he was going to go home and pray on it. . . .
Two days later, he issued an executive order allowing syringes to be distributed in Scott County.

imho, I think that most Republicans are raised in artificial sheltered environments and grow up being indoctrinated with an elaborate set of delusions. This happens all over the world, only the set of delusions is tailored to each particular culture and subculture. People so carefully raised literally cannot recognize what they see in front of them if the reality contradicts their indoctrinated belief system.
I don't think you can just assume "Republicans know" simply because the information is right there in front of them and it is obvious. Some know. Many don't.

(22,651 posts)the social program is administered by a "for profit" corporation or business using Federal/State taxpayer money to generate personal profits.
IMO, Democracy demands a 'not for profit' system for basic social needs like healthcare, food and shelter..

(783 posts)That always blows my mind, how they can co-opt the name of Christianity for a belief system so completely contrary to Christianity's most basic teachings -- for example the sermon on the mount, you'd think that would jump out at them, wouldn't you? But guess not. Most of them have never read that stuff, though, I've noticed that, because they don't seem to know what it says. They listen to people tell them some misinterpretation and never read the actual book. Still at times I wonder if maybe some of them have honestly been able to twist up their minds into some pretzel pattern that makes them able to think they're really following what Jesus taught, as quoted in the bible at least. Haven't been able to figure that out.
