Mayor: Palm Beach may need to raise taxes to pay for Trump security at Mar-a-Lago

Source: The Hill

Palm Beach County officials are reportedly considering raising taxes if they don't receive help from the federal government or President Trump himself to cover costs associated with Trump's security during his visits to his private Mar-a-Lago club.

According to a report by CNN, the sheriff's department said it costs about $60,000 in overtime every day Trump spends in Florida.

While the Secret Service is primarily responsible for protecting Trump, CNN reported that between the 14 days Trump has spent in Florida since taking office – and a planned trip to Florida this weekend – the sheriff's department will have spent more than $1 million.

The department could end up paying millions in overtime costs associated with Trump's future trips, money not currently budgeted for the county, according to the report. And if the county is stuck footing the bill, some officials said they may have to raise taxes or cut services.

Trump: 'I would rarely leave the White House'

http://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/245884-trump-i-would-rarely-leave-the-white-house

“I would rarely leave the White House because there’s so much work to be done,” Trump, 69, tells ITK. "I would not be a president who took vacations. I would not be a president that takes time off.”

----------

Yes, I would live in the White House because it’s the appropriate thing to do,” he says.

The City Council of Palm Beach should revaluate Mar-a-Lago to $100 billion - and tax the property accordingly - because THEY can.

IIRC Trump bought the place for $5 million. Palm Beach's resident cohort contains enough rich people who don't like the bastard that they could fairly easily scrape up $15 million...which he would probably take rather than pay 75 percent of his club's profits as property tax.

that a county could reassess the property's value. Ir so, I would think that Trump becoming President could be used to increase his property. Since he is also a negative impact on everyone else, I could live with their property values being lowered and taxes reduced. That way, the property value of all property has been reviewed.

coast after he was elected would be an argument the value of the property has been allegedly enhanced by his election. I think that the membership cost went from $100,000 to $200,000 under the guise of offering members a seat at the table (so to speak).

It happens all the time. Suppose you own a hotel in the middle of nowhere and then one day Disneyland decides to open another Disneyland right next to it. Bingo, your hotel will be worth a lot more as soon as the new Disneyland opens for business. An extreme example just to illustrate the idea.
If you live in a nice neighborhood and some localized economic downturn occurs, such that people lose their jobs and leave the area, abandoning their houses (it happens) - then your house, which has not itself changed, goes down in value.

The value of your property depends partly on the surroundings.

Local schools close down? Now families don't want to buy houses in the area. Nobody buys your house for sale, so you lower the asking price until you can find a buyer. The value goes down.

Local business depends on access to roads and flights? Some jerk conducts his affairs in such a way that his presence impacts traffic and flights? Now no new business or person needing access to those resources wants to buy property in your area. You find it more difficult to sell your property because of this, and you have to reduce the price to find a buyer. That is what it means for value to go down on a property.

Oh, come to think of it, that last example sounds a lot like the Palm Beach situation. (But I like the argument about his doubling the cost of membership much better. He has himself testified thereby that he thinks the value has doubled. That should be enough to double the valuation. Let him take it to court if he disagrees -- but he's already given evidence that he also thinks it's doubled.)

Palm Beach County is comprised of 41 towns, villages and cities. West Palm Beach is the largest city and the county seat. Palm Beach may be the playground of millionaires and billionaires, but that's not the entire county. Whys should 1.5M people see their taxes go up because Trump has decided to go to Mar-a-Lago almost every weekend? The county should send him the bill, he can afford to pay it.
