Sanders will 'absolutely' work with Trump to lower prescription drug costs
Source: The Hill
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Sunday he would absolutely work with President Trump to pass legislation to lower prescription medication costs.
President Trump, come on board, Sanders told CNNs Dana Bash on State of the Union. Let's work together. Let's end the absurdity of Americans paying by far the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs.
Sanders pointed to proposed legislation that would lower costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices.

Sanders just a few weeks earlier called on Trump to support his legislation. "If Mr. Trump is serious about taking on PhRMA, if Mr. Trump is serious about having Medicare ... negotiate prescription drug prices with the pharmaceutical industry, we are going to have very shortly very significant legislation to do just that. I would hope that Mr. Trump would join us and support that legislation, Sanders said.

(9,033 posts)Those who thought he wanted to help them are watching. The more promises he breaks--like draining the swamp, great healthcare for everyone, jobs coming back, winning so much--the bigger the backlash. And it shows up the repukes too. He's incompetent and disengaged and in it for himself, they are malevolent, and the more obvious that is the better.

The president campaigned as a populist against the Democratic and Republican establishments, Schumer said on ABCs This Week. He ran as a defender of the middle class. The minute he got into office, maybe led by Vice President Pence or some of the others, he moved so far to the hard right that its virtually impossible for us to work with him.
If he changes, he could have a different presidency, but hes going to have to tell the Freedom Caucus and the hard-right special wealthy interests who are dominating his presidency, Schumer added.
He said that Democrats will certainly look at his proposals if Trump ditches the policies that have been a hallmark of his presidency so far, noting that any future support would be guided by our values.
We all know Trump has no intention of working with us on anything but there's logic in acting like the adults in the room. When Trump refuses to cooperate Dems can say "See? We tried and he failed to live up to his promises."
Schumer and Sanders know how to give Trump all the rope he needs.

(1,058 posts)Because I think Trump _is_ willing to work with Democrats.
The question is what we'd be willing to trade for that. It's going to be a constant "poison pill" battle that will allow Republicans to claim "Democrats voted against negotiating for better prescription prices" on a bill that also includes provisions to gut consumer medical protections. It could be very ugly.

I see no reason why he won't turn on Republicans. That's his modus operandi. Say, if we can us him before he can use us, who knows..

(17,387 posts)...Trump might be desperate enough for validation that he embraces at least one or two progressive ideas so that he can sell himself as a populist so long as it does not require him to give up his tax cuts.

(22,913 posts)The bill has already been introduced. You would prefer Trump oppose it? Tell that to people who can't afford essential medication. When Democrats propose progressive solutions for America of course the President is welcome to support those solutions. And of course he won't, but that is a different story. Get him on record as doing nothing constructive for America, and then tear into him.
