Trumps Far-Right Supporters Turn on Him Over Syria Strike
Source: New York Times
Some of President Trumps most ardent campaign supporters were among his most vocal opponents on Thursday after he ordered the missile strike against Syria, charging him with breaking his promise to keep the United States out of another conflict in the Middle East.
Prominent writers and bloggers on the far right attacked Mr. Trump. They accused him of turning against his voters by waging an attack that he had for years said would be a terrible idea. They also criticized him for launching the strike without first seeking congressional approval something he said on Twitter in 2013 would be a big mistake.
The most vocal in their outrage were leaders from the small but influential white nationalist movement.
...snip...
Richard Spencer, a far-right activist and white nationalist who coined the term alt-right, said he condemned the attack and hinted at supporting another presidential candidate in 2020: Representative Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, a Democrat. Ms. Gabbard met with President Bashar al-Assad of Syria in January and on Thursday criticized the missile strike as shortsighted and reckless.

(16,104 posts)This is all just a game and manipulation to him, a brand and a pitch on a show with bad, plummeting ratings.
While brown Islamic babies might not be a concern to 'white nationalists,' they supported this idiot because for years he had appeared like-minded. He never supported babies before (except financing their care through multiple wives and exes).
This is a monumental broken promise to his base of supporters. How much more can they tolerate?

My biggest takeaway from Trump's bombing was as more evidence of the fall of Bannon's. There is no geopolitica grand strategy. JustJavanka, probably with genuine revultion at the images of the kids, are ascendant and Bannon's power more diminished.

(23,156 posts)Everything else is just knee jerk reactions at the time. One just never knows which direction Hair Furor will go, he's so totally all over the place. When this happened, he basically said nothing for 24 hours. Then after seeing the pictures on TV, he got all up in arms, and realized this was a really bad thing, so reacted. What bothers me is I read somewhere else that Syria had moved out most of their planes and personnel ahead of time, so it's like they were forewarned. That bothers me a lot. Who is leaking classified intelligence to Russia so they could alert Assad? With this gang of criminals he's accumulated in DC, there's no telling which person put Russia over US interests. Such treachery!

(47,602 posts)the whole thing looks a lot like Kabuki theater, which is what Malcolm Nance tweeted earlier. The Russians were informed of the attack before our own congress.

(23,156 posts)Kabuki theater indeed. I'm beginning to wonder if Drumpf didn't do this in part to try to make it look like he's actually independent of Putin, especially with all the Russian stated outrage when they were notified in advance. Guess they think we won't figure that out? I went to NYT and WaPo and neither of them had information (at least at the time) about Russia and therefore Syria being notified in advance. This is obviously non-serious or we wouldn't have given Syria backdoor notice.

(47,602 posts)this was all pretty slick, though I seriously doubt it was his idea. I can picture Putin chuckling (if Putin ever chuckles) and meanwhile, the media isn't paying attention to the Trump-Russian connection. This was all a very expensive "wag the dog" display and now Trump can pretend he is a real Commander-in-Chief.
lark
(23,156 posts)They are all craven and slippery enough to plan this out. Hair Furor isn't anywhere near smart enough for this tour de force. So far the major media is so falling for the ploy. So a missile explodes, so what? Any damage? Of course, that's not being reported. It's all, hey, look over there, Drumpf stood up to Russia.
Hell the fuck no he didn't! This is yet another collusion with Russia. This time the goal to create an appearance of conflict, when really they are 100% complicit.
Trump is all bluster and hot air. This was far too clever for him. Meanwhile, the media fell for it and kept playing video clips of the missiles going off. Brought back bad memories of Bush's "Shock and Awe" campaign. The media loves things that blow up. They are so mesmerized by the display, they forget to ask questions.
It all has a very Putinesque feel to it. Perhaps Jared had a hand in it as well.

(4,168 posts)The Alt-Right think Obama was weak because he didn't strike against Syria, but Trump is wrong because he did strike and risks getting us into a new war.
Obama was a tyrant for overstepping the bounds of the executive office, but he played by the rules in asking Congress for permission to bomb and they said no. Trump bombs away and it's not a problem for Congress.
Syrian women and children are too dangerous to let into this country as refugees, but once they're gassed to death we care enough to bomb the shit out of their country.
To insure a "measured response", we warn Russia who then warns Syria, so the airstrike is largely symbolic and serves what purpose?

(22,671 posts)This is why I prefer we always elect Democrats for everything. Because when people like these alt-right weirdos have their way, it's just one disaster after another. They're like hyper little children who don't know any better. And if they're unhappy, so what! They're always unhappy.

(23,511 posts)Actually, I think that many that might consider themselves part of "alt-right" might have considered Obama's non-military intervention against the Syrian government to be a sort of rare bright spot. I think a widely-held view is that Obama held out against a crowd of neo-conservatives and "war hawk" Democrats like John Kerry and Hillary Clinton.
Personally, I think that Trump has exposed himself as an agent to the war hawks with this move. He has aided the forces of international terrorism by striking an army that's the most powerful force on the ground combating Islamist extremism.

(63,224 posts)This might do more to drive Herr Trump out of office than anything that Democrats might put together. If these Far-Right lunatics extend their anger to the GOP at large, you can bet that we'll see a push by those cowardly shills to distance themselves from Trump, not least by removing him from office.
