NC Legislators Angry at 'Bathroom Law' Boycotts Pass Bill Threatening Atlantic Coast Conference

Source: Mediaite

by Joe DePaolo | 9:29 am, April 13th, 2017

Despite criticism from LGBT advocates, the recent repeal of North Carolina’s controversial “bathroom law” was enough for the NCAA to lift its boycott to return the championship events to the state. But evidently, North Carolina lawmakers remain upset by various sports leagues ditching the state. And now, they’ve passed legislation to prevent one major college sports entity from boycotting North Carolina in the future.

According to ESPN, North Carolina’s legislature passed a measure which would require state schools to leave any conference that enacts a boycott in North Carolina. Essentially, this is a threat to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), which followed the lead of the NCAA and pulled its events from the state last year. If the ACC were to boycott again, the new law would require member schools N.C. State, and most notably, the University of North Carolina (college basketball’s reigning National Champions) to leave the conference.

Mark Brody, a Republican state representative, was a primary sponsor of the new law. His comments to ESPN made it obvious that the bill was designed to serve as a threat to the ACC.

“Now these conferences, they’re going to have to think twice about doing a boycott, especially for something that’s as out of their core mission as they did trying to influence legislation of the General Assembly,” Brody said. “If they do it again, now they’ll know there will be a price to pay.”

If the schools leave the conference, wouldn't they have to pay a fine to the ACC?

I don't know who is more ignorant--the NC legislators who just don't believe that anyone who is not a straight white male has any rights or the Oklahoma Congressman who claimed that he paid his own salary through his taxes and thus owed nothing to constituents. Knowledge and experience used to be expected in our legislators. Now it's hypocrisy and extreme Christian Taliban beliefs. Most of these legislators do not believe real Christian doctrine (at least their actions do not express Christian doctrine) and just spout their support to get elected. Since most of them are men, the word "cockalorum" comes to mind as a good descriptor for each of them (and for that idiot in the White House, too--at least the small-minded part)!

These knuckleheads are about to penalize their own colleges, students, and loyal sport fans. That should go over well come election time.

The NCAA and ACC saw that the world didn't come to an end when they boycotted having postseason games in that state. I guess Brody doesn't want UNC and Duke to have virtual home games in the first round of the NCAAs.

And force UNC, NC State, Wake Forest and Duke to leave the ACC? Haha! Yeah, right. I doubt even this buffoon is that much of an idiot. Or, hell, maybe he is - republicans these days always exceed my (already low) expectations.

I bet NCAA could take this to court and get it declared null and void with great ease.

When I retire and go on my tour of America, NC was one of the places I wanted to spend a few days. Now, I'll just spend more time in SC instead. NC will only get the benefit of my gas $, will not even stop and eat there. It's not much, but if enough people boycott NC and refuse to spend their disposable $ there, they might start realizing there's a cost to their hate.

Asheville and the mountains of NC are a wonderful part of the country - just beautiful. And Asheville is a little blue oasis in red state NC!
