Trump budget chief: Spending bill must have money for wall

WASHINGTON — White House budget director Mick Mulvaney says that Democratic negotiators on a massive spending bill need to agree to fund top priorities of President Donald Trump such as a down payment on a border wall and hiring of additional immigration agents.

Mulvaney told The Associated Press in an interview that "elections have consequences" and that "we want wall funding" as part of the catchall spending bill, which lawmakers hope to unveil next week.

The former GOP congressman from South Carolina also said that the administration is open, though undecided, about a key Democratic demand that the measure pay for cost-sharing payments to insurance companies that help low-income people afford health policies under the Affordable Care Act.

The $1 trillion-plus legislation is leftover business from last year's election-season gridlock and would cover the operating budgets of every Cabinet department except for Veterans Affairs.

Mike Pence: Mexico will pay for border wall

Vice President Pence stressed in an interview early Wednesday that Mexico will pay for President Trump's proposed border wall.

"One of the things people saw last night is that the candidate Donald Trump is the President Donald Trump, and he spoke about those priorities," Pence said during an interview with "Good Morning America" host George Stephanopoulos. "We're going to build a wall. We're going to enforce the laws of this country."

"Trump didn't say Mexico is going to pay for [the wall]," Stephanopoulos interjected.

"Well, they are," Pence said. As a presidential candidate, Trump insisted that he would make Mexico pay for the massive wall. But the country's president, Enrique Peña Nieto, has firmly rejected that notion, saying it was "against our dignity as Mexicans."

more Border Patrol Agents, but Trump can stuff his stupid wall. Trump painted himself into a corner with his promise of a wall that Mexico paid for. I really don't think that wall, at least the wall he envisioned, will ever get built. How will the Tumptards handle that bit of news? They'll never hear about it. The alt-right "news" sources will all hail it as a great victory, and of course we know that they don't immerse themselves in actual, factual news. Reich-wing propaganda is all they want, and can handle.

The Border Agents? They can't find enough qualified people to fill the slots they have at present. Without lowering their standards they'll probably never fill all of the positions. Yet another Trump campaign promise failure. But his supporters will never hear of that, either.
