HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. Police arrested an Oregon man and accused him of setting another man on fire this week at a Dennys restaurant.
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Deshaun James Swanger, 24, of Milwaukie. He was arrested Thursday at a transitional home just a few blocks away from the Happy Valley restaurant.
. . .
The incident happened Wednesday night, shortly after a young man entered the restaurant, located in a Portland suburb, and sat in booth adjacent to the victim. Police said surveillance video showed the man douse the victim with gasoline and toss a lit match.
. . .
Detectives are looking into the possibility that this case is related to another incident earlier this week, in which a person threw gasoline on a stranger at a movie theater.

(6,699 posts)I no longer live in Oregon, but I live across the Colombia River in Vancouver, WA. That being said, these type of crazy bastards are NOT your everyday Oregonian. I drive for Uber, and just tonight, I had a young fellow from New York that expressed living in Portland, as the personal attachment that people have for each other here in the PNW is refreshing. We have crazies on the road, but not like the HUGE cities south, in LA and the bay area. Folks here are tolerant and forgiving for the most part.
But that being said, EVERY PLACE has their share of the crazies. You'll find religious zealots here in the PNW, just like you will in deep red states and elsewhere.
I hope they string this bastard up by his heels. We don't need this sort of irrational and cruel behavior anywhere in the world.

(43,182 posts)Open records laws.
Florida has some of the most lenient open records laws in the country. And that has translated over to including things like police reports.
And the thing about crime, both petty crime and also non petty crime, is that it frequently is bizarre, weird and completely nonsensical.
So by having looser open records laws than most states, Florida provides something of a window into the wild and crazy world of criminal life.
So really whatever your state is--if it isn't already Florida--it probably is just as crazy as Florida. We're just a little more out in the open about it.
