At Least 2 U.S. Service Members Killed in Anti-ISIS Raid in Eastern Afghanistan

Source: NBC

At least two U.S. military service members were killed Thursday and another wounded during a raid against an ISIS target in eastern Afghanistan, a Pentagon spokesman told NBC News.

The operation occurred near Achin, a district in the south of Nangarhar province, where earlier this month the U.S. dropped the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used — also known as the "mother of all bombs" — to obliterate an ISIS tunnel complex.

Afghanistan remains mired in violence and bloodshed as the Taliban and ISIS fight over territory and clash against government and coalition forces.

While military officials say the non-nuclear bomb strike was a tactical one, questions have arisen as to whether the U.S. plans to escalate the war in Afghanistan.

this is right on the Pakistan border, which we've never established control over. We never will. We'll just accept the attrition of American lives.

the Taliban/Daesh will never be stopped as long as Pakistan allows their resupply.

Friendly fire inquiry after US soldiers die battling IS

28 April 2017 US & Canada

Two US Army Rangers killed in Afghanistan this week may have been hit by friendly fire, the Pentagon says.

The soldiers were fatally wounded during a firefight on Wednesday night with the Islamic State (IS) group in eastern Afghanistan, US officials said.

The two were identified on Friday as Sgt Joshua Rodgers, 22, and Sgt Cameron Thomas, 23, who were both on their third deployment to Afghanistan.

A bullet grazed a third Ranger but he was expected to make a full recovery.

US Forces in Afghanistan said in a statement: "USFOR-A is investigating the possibility that the two Rangers were accidentally killed by friendly fire during the more than three-hour fight.
