Trump vetoes Carter tribute in Argentina
Source: Buenos Aires Herald
Argentine President Mauricio Macri reverted a decision to award former U.S. President Jimmy Carter the Order of the Liberator General San Martín - the maximum distinction the country can give to a foreign person.
The reversal followed pressure from President Donald Trump's administration, CNN reported this week.
The official tribute, which had already been published in the foreign ministry's Official Gazette, was cancelled after receiving a specific request by the U.S. government, which suggested it would be better to delay it.
Carter was to be given the award for his work in promoting human rights during Argentina's last military dictatorship, in power between 1976 and 1983. According to an official, 1984 Argentine report, deaths by forced disappearance slowed from 3,600 in 1976 to just 46 in 1980.
After being informed about the decision, the Argentine Foreign Ministry again requested that President Macri give the award in spite of Trumps opposition since it had already been made official, according to an anonymous foreign ministry official consulted by CNN's David Cox.

A lot of the right-wing Cuban exiles that Republicans always lard the State Department's Western Hemisphere office are still apologists for the brutal (and kleptocratic) Latin dictatorships of the '70s and '80s.
My guess is that this was their suggestion - though I doubt Cheeto needed much encouragement.

There's also reason to believe Trump's collecting bribes from Venezuela, whose leftist government has become a favorite target of RW Cubans, in order to keep Trump off their backs.
I hope and trust that Argentina's Macri - a real right-winger himself - will rise to the occasion and rebuff Trump's anti-Carter tantrum. We'll see.

(5,813 posts)Our outrage and disgust with this person occupying the White House seems to increase with each passing day, but we sure as hell can't say we're surprised. This skidmark told us and showed us who he is a long time ago. He is a petty, vindictive creature who would turn on his own grandmaw if he thought for a minute it would make people love and revere him.
The fact that he has aimed his venom at a lovely man like Jimmy Carter just underscores for us how low he can sink. His jealousy and envy know no bounds, so it is a given that he will continue to show us who he is deep inside.
As an aside, we often are reminded of how little insight tRump has and how poorly he is regarded by the majority of Americans (and people around the world). Listening to that interview he did yesterday where he talks about how much he misses his previous life and how hard the job being President is seems to be showing a side of tRump we've never seen. Not that I am expecting an epiphany....but maybe for the first time in his pathetic life he is getting a reality check into what he got himself into when he assumed the position of POTUS. It is NOT an easy job and it is kicking his ass. If he lets down the facade he has built around himself regarding what people really think about him, he is in for a rude awakening. Surprise, tRump! You don't automatically get love and respect upon being sworn in as president. You still have to earn it. Like Carter did.

Macri is a neocon though - and a personal friend of Trump's besides - dating from a Manhattan real estate deal that Trump actually screwed Macri's father, Francesco, out of in 1984 (amazingly, they later became friends).
Will Macri stand up to King Con for once in his life? Remains to be seen.

Argentina would not award decoration to Jimmy Carter by order of Trump
By David Cox , CNN
17:25 ET (21:25 GMT) April 23, 2017
(CNN) - At the suggestion of Donald Trump, the government of Argentina's president Mauricio Macri would have given up the official awarding of the award with the Order of the Liberator San Martin, the highest distinction in that country, former President Jimmy Carter, Who ruled the United States from 1976 to 1981.
When asked for a response from the White House, a source consulted by CNN en Español said they were not aware of that information. Another source, an ex-official from the Argentine government, attributed the postponement of Carter's official release to possibly a matter of agenda since President Macri had a lightning trip to Washington on April 26 and 27, and there probably would not be enough time.
According to a press release from the Argentine Foreign Ministry , the former US ambassador. Martin Lousteau had been the one who proposed to decorate with the Order of the Liberator San Martin to the ex- American president. According to some local media in Argentina , it had been debated whether Lousteau as ambassador would grant him the decoration, but it was decided that it would be President Macri who would do so in Washington during his trip. President Carter's communications director Deanna Congileo told CNN that at the moment she has no details about the recognition and that she can not confirm it for now, despite the fact that the news has become public.
The source consulted by CNN, an official of the Argentine government who asked for anonymity, said that in addition to postponing the award, the Carter Center was aware that it had been decorated.
. . .
American diplomat F. Allen "Tex" Harris, decorated with the Order of the Liberator General San Martin during the government of President Néstor Kirchner, to save lives while serving as Secretary of the Political Section of the Embassy of the States in Buenos Aires , Told CNN that the Carter administration's human rights policy was a "decisive accelerator in getting justice and trials against the military that perpetrated crimes." Harris also said that the actions of Carter's human rights policy managed to hasten the end of the regime and was a key factor in achieving "a cascade of justice in Argentina."

(2,037 posts)His policies, happily adopted by the Junta's very elitist Economy Minister, José Alfredo Martínez de Hoz, actually did more harm to Argentina than the Dirty War itself.
He froze wages (which forced real pay down by 40% by 1978), enacted free trade (which flooded the country with imports, driving thousands of industries out of business), and deregulated finance - which led to $30 billion in bad debts (in 1980 dollars, and for just 28 million people).
The combined effects derailed the Argentine economy. And because the IMF basically governed economic policy for the next 20 years, poverty continued to grow until reaching 57% in 2002.
They had gotten back on track from 2003 to 2015, under the much-maligned Kirchners; but racist dog whistles and a massive media campaign brought right-wingers back - this time, narrowly, by way of elections - and the country has been in a sharp recession ever since.
That would be Trump's old buddy Macri.
