LONDON (AP) - With the Olympic Games as a backdrop, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Thursday plunged into a series of meetings with British leaders, including Prime Minister David Cameron.
The likely GOP nominee sought to send a message that he recognizes the close bonds between the U.S. and its top ally - and to project an image of leadership.
"I've got a number of conversations with leaders present and past of Great Britain," Romney said Thursday, "and recognize of course the unique relationship that exists between our nations, our commitment to common values, our commitment to peace in the world and a desire to see a stronger and growing economy."
Romney's weeklong overseas trip will also take him to Israel and Poland.

(4,113 posts)For most of this week, we've been hearing about Rmoney's mission to improve and bolster our ties with the British. Did I miss something? I'm not aware of any major problems with our relationship with the British. But the media play along and make this sound like it's a sensitive issue and a big measuring stick on Rmoney's skills on foreign affairs.
I wonder if the Soviet Union threat will enter the conversations?
Geesh!

(101,320 posts)Mitt Romney is perhaps the only politician who could start a trip that was supposed to be a charm offensive by being utterly devoid of charm and mildly offensive.
His derisory comments questioning Britains preparedness for the Olympics in an interview with NBC were a strange way to build bridges with a country that he says should be restored as the umbilical ally of the United States, and a strange way to demonstrate the persuasive qualities needed as leader of the free world.
...
But his comments to NBC, particularly his doubts about Britons ability to celebrate the games, showed how poorly he understands the land of his forefathers.
If he possessed a smidgeon of insight into the British psyche he would have known that despite all the pre-match whingeing and the carping, that on the night we will celebrate the games with all the appropriate gusto and fervour they deserve. We moan, and then we smile; that is just our way.
...
Not once have I heard him praise Britain or extol the special relationship he now trumpets. He even reprised his dislike of the NHS shortly before leaving for these shores of benighted, yellow-toothed natives who spend half their lives waiting in hospital, having tried as governor of Massachusetts to ensure that everyone in his state, as in Britain, had access to health care.

So it looks like he's lost the Telegraph, which would be the paper most likely to support him in Britain - I guess the denials of the quotes they had about 'Anglo-Saxons' have pissed them off.

election is about the New Deal. Will the GOP grab the political power to end it,
or will the Democrats hold on to perpetuate it. This is the most important
election since 1932.
