Nothing is easier and more pathetic than being a critic, because theyre people that cant get the job done, President Donald Trump said from the podium at Liberty University on Saturday morning.
The line, delivered by the leader of the free worldwho has criticized via his Twitter account everyone from Rosie ODonnell to recently fired FBI Director James Comeywas delivered in a commencement speech rife with generalized aphorisms and motivational quotes one might see on a local yoga studios Instagram account.
Trump arrived in Lynchburg, Virginia, capping what was perhaps the most hectic week in a hectic presidency, to a largely welcoming environmentone which the thrice-married real estate mogul had already partially wooed in the 2016 election. He was flanked onstage by Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of Liberty, who wholeheartedly endorsed Trump and helped shepherd some 80 percent of white evangelical voters to the ballot box on his behalf.
"As long as I am your president, no one is ever going to stop you from practicing your faith," Trump said to the crowd of newly minted graduates. He had already delivered, at least symbolically, on a promise he made the last time he spoke at the university as a candidate in January 2016. "We're going to protect Christianity, and I can say that. I don't have to be politically correct, Trump said at the time, at which point he also referred to one of the books of the Bible as Two Corinthians.

Highlights from Trump's Liberty University commencement speech
President Trump delivered the commencement speech at Liberty University today where he bashed the "broken" system in Washington, called out the critics, read out the school's football schedule and touched on religious freedom.
-snip-
Key quotes:
* "No one has ever achieved anything significant without a chorus of critics standing on the sidelines explaining why it can't be done. Nothing is easier or more pathetic than being a critic, because they're people that can't get the job done."
* "In my short time in Washington, I have seen firsthand how the system is broken. A small group of failed voices who think they know everything and understand everyone want to tell everybody else how to live and what to do and how to think, but you aren't going to let other people tell you what you believe, especially when you know that you are right."
* "Nothing worth doing ever, ever, ever came easy. Following your convictions means you must be willing to face criticism from those who lack the same courage to do what is right and they know what is right, but they don't have the courage or the guts or the stamina to take it and to do it."
* "Treat the word 'impossible' as nothing more than motivation."
Why it matters: Saturday's commencement speech gave Trump an opportunity to address a largely-supportive audience reminiscent of his campaign rallies, which he desperately needed after a rough week of firing James Comey and trying to explain his decision.

Ahh, the Republican party, the provocateur of victim complexes everywhere. Snowflakes!
Coming to take our guns, our religion, taint our white race, what else do they tell them all to be afraid of?

Isn't that who the immigration ban was targeting?
Last I checked, there was a broad representation of various and valid faiths in this country...
They are all damned to hell, according to these sorts of mindbogglingly ignorant white "Christians".
I have my own notions of who will really be damned to hell.....
What would Jesus do?
These clowns really have no concept of self awareness, or enlightenment, and only use cherry picked catch phrases out of context from their Bible to suit their own narrow minded ideas and self centered hateful prejudices.
Bless their pointed little heads!
This too shall pass....

Seriously, that is how a lot on the right deal with the cognitive dissonance of being anti-Islam and yet supporting religion in the public square.

What's not so funny is that students there receive nearly 1/2 billion dollars a year in federal financial aid -- our tax dollars supporting a religious institution.

(20,997 posts)HE is pathetic, minus any pathos. a tic sucking off america.
Never even mentioned religion, the bible, or anything else related to Christianity prior to the election. Well, except when he started attending church with Marla to slip out and bang Melania (or so it said at supermarket checkouts). Otherwise I never recall anything that put religion into Trump's actions or interviews. Not so much as a whisper. Then when he began his campaign all he had to do a few times was to mention Christian right wing talking points and the Jebus freaks just slobbered all over themselves screaming, "Hez one'uv US!"

(1,007 posts)Down our throats? I don't believe politicians should even state their religion. Nor should they be forcing people to lower their heads while THEY pray. 'God' and 'Jesus' and 'Allah' should be politically incorrect to speak while in congress and we are paying their wages. I am not paying taxes so they can preach religion!!!

It's entirely appropriate that Trump, who gets his hair care advice from Bozo the Clown, should speak at that puffed up half rate diploma mill.

(50,563 posts)It's 9 am in the office of Jerry Falwell Jr., president of America's most important Christian madrassa. He calls to his secretary.
"Mary? Has that man from Maintenance arrived yet?"
'Yes sir. Shall I send him in?'
"Please."
"Hello, I'm Dr. Falwell. And you are?"
'Joseph, sir.'
"Joseph. Ah. A very good name. I have a very important job for you. Our esteemed president Donald Trump is speaking on our campus in a few days, and we need to make it a warm and welcoming environment for him."
'And how can I do that?'
"First, run across the street to Home Depot and buy a case of duct tape. No, make it two just to be sure, he might come back and we'll need to do it all over again. Also get five gallons of paint thinner. Then go around campus looking for Ten Commandments monuments. When you find one, tape over the First through Fourth and Seventh through Tenth Commandments. After he leaves, clean off all the tape."
'Sir, wouldn't it be easier just to put tarps over them?'
"Yes. That would be fine. Any other questions?"
'Sir, may I speak freely?'
"Yes, Joseph, you may."
'If President Trump would have enrolled in this university as a student on Monday we would have expelled him that Thursday over honor code violations. Why are we welcoming him as an esteemed guest?'
"Because we had two choices last year - get behind the truly evil man that Donald Trump is, or let Hillary Clinton take our Bibles away."
