Suspect who set fire to Florida mosque seen in surveillance video, police say
Source: ABC News
Deputies in Hillsborough County, Florida, are searching for a male suspect seen in a newly released surveillance video setting fire to a local mosque.
The incident occurred on February 27, 2017 at approximately 2:00 a.m. local time at the Islamic Society of New Tampa in Thonotosassa. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue received a call just a few minutes later, around 2:09 a.m., about the fire. Firefighters put out the blaze and no one was hurt, though the building, commonly referred to as the New Tampa Mosque, suffered some property damage, officials said.
Deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office released the video, she said, in hopes someone will recognize the person in the captured footage and come forward with any leads.
Officials from CAIR Florida, the states largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, held a news conference with officials outside the mosque shortly after the February fire took place. Debbie Carter, Public Information Officer with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, told ABC News that the surveillance video of the February incident was released months later because the original footage was of poor quality that required a lot of editing.

(3,765 posts)A guy with a mask, gloves and a white protective suit. I'm not sure if I could identity him if he was my brother. I can't tell if he's white, black or Hispanic. I guess if you knew someone with that outfit and knew his walk..

He's a coward, wearing that silly voluminous suit, rubber gloves, black shoes, a big hat to keep the moon out of his eyes.
Hope he chokes.

(14,856 posts)Is that kind of protective suit worn by employees of Tampa's water utility?
It's mostly a Sunni mosque according to what I read. Does water have special meaning to Shi'a?
It's probably meaningless, but I recall a supposed Shi'a with an account named 'Water' on Yahoo, and he frequently wrote violence-promoting posts against Sunnis. I bookmarked his Yahoo profile page for awhile, two or three years ago, amazed that he was allowed to keep the account. He apparently had a large audience of Shi'a supporters who replied and approved his posts too.
