ACLU: Trump refused to turn over Giuliani travel ban memo by court-ordered deadline
Source: The Hill
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on Saturday blasted President Trump for ignoring a court order demand to release a memo drafted under former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's guidance that outlined a plan to implement a travel ban without making it seem as if it was directly aimed at Muslims.
A federal judge in Detroit ordered the Trump administration to turn over the memo by May 19, according to reports. The ACLU said Saturday that Trump did not meet the deadline on Friday.
If, as the administration claims, the Executive Order is not a Muslim Ban, then why is the administration refusing to turn over the Giuliani memo? What is in that document that the government doesnt want the court to see? Miriam Aukerman, Senior Staff Attorney at the ACLU of Michigan, said in a statement.
The ACLU along with Arab American Civil Rights League (ACRL) challenged the president's travel ban on nationals from several Muslim-majority countries in federal court earlier this year.

Reminds me of what Will Rogers used to say about our party sometimes.

(4,033 posts)the simple response is for the court to say that since the Administration refuses to obey a court order, then the Summarily grant judgement to the plaintiff and grant a permanent stay or the EO.

(19,201 posts)I joined the minute I found out, for sure, that he'd "won" the presidential election. I knew the ACLU would be tested with that nit-wit in Washington. I'm a card carrying member now. It's time to send them another contribution.

(16,963 posts)flynn, a career military officer, who seems to have missed the memo on defending the Constitution of the U.S., refuses to obey a subpoena for private documents, trump, who has missed every memo ever, ignores a court order? What laws do they break next? And get away with? If trump et all can get away with it, how about we remove all the traffic signals and erase all the laws on the books? We can all ignore the rule of law. Then, we can all go riot in the streets, and the U.S. can go up in flames. Well done, you repuke traitors.

(19,201 posts)Donald Trump doesn't HAVE TO obey the laws that mere LITTLE PEOPLE obey! He's the Preznit, and before that he was just "The Donald". Even the laws of mathematics and science don't apply to him. How else could you explain the fact that he stuffs 300 lbs. of shit into that sorry sack of skin he calls a body?
Gosh people.......you'd think we'd know and understand this by now. Time to send the ACLU another $50.

Trump is thumbing his nose at the judge, and pushing the limits of presidential immunity. I'd love to see the judge find grounds to jail Trump for contempt, too.

Throw them in jail.

(15,286 posts)IIRC, the Supreme Court ruled 9-0 against him when his legal team appealed to them. It's possible the federal court will consider that 5/19 was the day Trump and co left for Eur/ME and give them a new deadline, but ultimately, they will have to comply or face contempt charges.

(4,787 posts)This happens frequently. It's allowed.
The ACLU will respond by filing a motion with the court this week requesting that Trump be compelled to fork it over. The judge will review the defendants' objections and the plaintiffs' reply and make her decision. I'd be surprised if she doesn't compel them to provide the document at that point.
