House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz on Monday said he will postpone a hearing scheduled for Wednesday after speaking with former FBI Director James Comey, who had been invited to testify.

“Spoke with Comey. He wants to speak with Special Counsel prior to public testimony. Hearing Wed postponed. @GOPoversight,” Chaffetz tweeted.

Former FBI chief Comey postpones testimony before U.S. House committee

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former FBI Director James Comey is delaying an appearance before the U.S. House Oversight Committee that had been planned for Wednesday, the panel's chairman said on Monday.

In a post on Twitter, Chairman Jason Chaffetz, who will step down from his seat in Congress in June, said he had spoken with Comey who told him that before testifying in public he wanted to speak with former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating ties between Russia and the presidential election campaign of Donald Trump.

An aide to the Oversight Committee could not confirm when the hearing would be rescheduled.

President Trump fired Comey on May 9. After reports that Trump asked Comey to stop investigating his campaign advisors ties, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein hired Mueller as special counsel to lead the investigation, a move expected to delay congressional hearings into Russian ties.

1. Oh, there's a small matter with Chaffetz...

Like removing the "classified" designation on the letter he received from Comey just before the election. Remember that letter? If the letter was indeed classified, then Comey has good reason to consult with Mueller before speaking to a possible target of an investigation.

Seriously I don't trust any of these scumbags, like Chaffetz. He is just smarter than the rest. He knows how to pretend how he is so non-partisan. His job is to find some way to either end up finding 'no conclusive evidence' that there was a collusion happening, or, if that's not possible, to minimize the damage. Make sure the least amount of GOP reps get caught in the web also. Keep Pence clean for one.

8. This isn't a surprise.

Comey wouldn't want to testify in front of the House if it could damage Mueller's investigation. In fact the day Muller's appointment was made it was speculated that Comey would delay any speaking in front of the House or Senate.

9. That's my thinking as well ... it's fun to theorize it's Chaffetz's evil doings (and could be, sure)

But I think the more likely reality is that Comey doesn't want to risk saying anything before Congress that might compromise Mueller's work ... IOW, he's likely the one requesting more time before appearing, and Chaffetz is probably okay with kicking the can down the road a bit ...

Say that he expects Comey will want to talk to Mueller first. Mueller may request that Comey not publically discuss some issues as they may support additional investigations.
