PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Dozens of Native American tribes in six Western states are bashing President Donald Trump's proposed budget cuts to American Indian programs.
Tribal leaders in Oregon, Washington state and Idaho speaking on behalf of the group said Thursday the proposed budget guts spending on Native American education, health care and environmental initiatives.
Mel Sheldon, a councilman from the Tulalip Tribes in Washington state, says it's the "worst attack on Indian Country in recent memory."
The proposed spending eliminates funding for work on climate change and makes deep cuts to programs to restore endangered species.

Will we be able to save ourselves from this? I hope so. A bit dramatic, maybe...but that's how I feel. This is horrible. I wouldn't think this is America, if I heard of this happening somewhere & didn't know it was our country.
This is truly an "austere" White House...except for rich people, who will be getting HUGE tax cuts. Austere for what? We're not in a recession. The economy is growing and is healthy.

Heard that just after reading your comment, around 10:45 PM, EST.
I hope I misunderstood you, as I can see no reason a sane person would want to slam the original citizens of this country.

(160,542 posts)Crow Tribe endorses Greg Gianforte for Congress
By MATT HUDSON mhudson@billingsgazette.com May 19, 2017 Updated May 20, 2017
BILLINGS Crow Tribal Chairman A.J. Not Afraid threw his administration's support behind the Republican candidate for Montana's Congressional seat during a Friday meeting in front of residents.
The candidate, Greg Gianforte, was on hand and appeared at two events in Crow Agency. One was a tribal government meeting; the second was a more informal barbecue held by former tribal Chairman Darrin Old Coyote.
At the first event, held in the Crow multi-purpose building in Crow Agency, Gianforte briefly ran through a number of policy points, including the creation of a west coast coal port to serve Crow exports.
. . .
Coal resonated through Not Afraid's endorsement on Friday. The Absaloka Mine is a major revenue source for the tribe, and the slowdown in industry-wide coal production has hit the Crow as well.
. . .
Another priority issue for Not Afraid is healthcare, and he said he hopes to see funding for more services at the local Indian Health Service facility.
"Those have been cut over the course of time," Not Afraid said. "Health care isn't fully provided at this time."

So sad to hear this. Gianforte seems to be in control of what they need, as he represents himself to them. Very sad.
Thanks for making your point.
I was shocked too as what the native Americans went through with the oil pipeline I truly do not UNDERSTAND there thinking Obama save them and tRump stabbed them in the back and STILL they support this asshole??????????

(160,542 posts)Gianforte must have already sucked up a lot of power already, and have the company owners backing him, and convinced the Crow leaders he'd make it harder for them if they didn't stand behind him.
After so much suffering, so damned long, and STILL the same kind of criminals are determined to keep absolute control over their lives.
One day we are ALL going to be free of these criminals. They are wildly outnumbered. It's just a matter of organization, and time.

(89,251 posts)More stomping on the poorest of the poor. The conditions of most people on the reservations look as bad as any in Haiti. Its shameful. Just as shameful as what was done to put them there. These are definitely not the "rich Indians" getting richer on their casinos. I've read that mining interests and other big business want to develop on these lands now, so maybe cutting their health care further is a way to finish them off in Rump's book.
