The Latest: Portland mayor urges cancellation of Trump rally

Source: Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Latest on fatal stabbings in Portland, Oregon (all times local):

2:20 p.m.

The mayor of Portland, Oregon, is calling on the federal government and organizers to cancel a "Trump Free Speech Rally" and other events next weekend after the fatal stabbing of two people who confronted a man hurling racial slurs at two young women on a train.

Mayor Ted Wheeler said Monday that the community is sad and angry, and the rallies are inappropriate and could be dangerous. He says his main concern is participants are "coming to pedal a message of hatred."

Wheeler said the three men who intervened on the train Friday were willing to give their lives to stand up for people they didn't know.

1. Asshole won't cancel. Poking a little finger into the eyes of latte liberals is what he lives for

Eventually one of these pep rallies for haters is going to spill out into the street in the form of a mob. People will get hurt and (worse for the Republicans), a lot of property will be damaged. You never know what a mob is going to do and the illusion that Asshole can control them will be shattered forever. Cities will fall all over themselves refusing permits after that happens, and it will.

IF the rally is held, the fascists get publicity and recruit new brownshirts and appear to be 'normalized'. If the officials cancel the rally or protestors shut it down, ''the left' is made out to be hateful free speech squelching Nazis who shut down all conflicting views.

Personally, I think they get more traction with their base when rallies are shut down than damage is done if we just let them have their little hate-fest for like minded troglodytes.... as much as I might hope the occasional Nazi gets punched

the question I have is, when did these people decide to have their rally "and other events", before or after the stabbings?

if the answer is "after", the permit should be denied for public safety reasons, or at least postponed. If "before", then ignore them. In any case, this one instance where I would caution against counter-protests though; some common sense is needed here since these people seem to be angling for a fight at a time when feelings are running high. And the Portland PoPo are known for being trigger-happy when rallies get un-peaceful.

Also, so what if they get some air time on the news? As long as the news is being reported accurately, I want to know how many of them there are. I want their friends and neighbors to see them for the assholes they are. Their numbers are small compared to the people who people who disagree with them, and it's getting harder by the day to be an outspoken Trump supporter. Anyone who gets "recruited" by them after what happened in Portland recently is beyond saving anyway.

And speaking of rallies, when are we going to have the next massive protest against this corrupt administration? When is the "Americans Against Treason" Rally happening? I'd like to watch the news reports on that!

But cancelling is a very slippery slope what with all the noise about suppressing protests. It cuts both ways. The ACLU is clear that they defend everyone's rights, not just those they agree with.

the media has to cover it though. Let them have their stupid "rally", but ask the media to not give them the attention they so undeservedly seek. Fuck 'em.

Giving these assholes attention is what they crave. Ignorant, racist and gullible they really need to be shunned. confronting them and arguing with them only fuels them. Mass silence or a mass moon in would be perfect.

Greet it with silence and boycotts. Let vendors and businesses close on the day they have their hatefest. Then, plan an even bigger event that has a theme of inclusion. Make sure everyone cooperates and does not even mention the haters and their rally.

12. I don't think the mayor meant "pedal" unless it was a bike rally. Even AP reporters

can't spell. It's peddle. Also, to most readers the headline signifies a rally at which Trump is the main feature. It should be "pro-Trump" rally. Small grammar details are important in communication -- it's amazing how many young journalists can't spell.

16. It's my opinion that this IS a free speech issue.........

because the calls for the cancellation of these rallies is coming from a government official. A cadre of anti-fascists shutting down a Nazi rally or meeting is NOT a "free speech" issue because the antifas are just using THEIR free speech rights to protest, but when it comes from a governmental official that's a different and repressive kettle of fish. I've said this all along and I'm going to be consistent.

Let them have their rally and let the antifas protest their rally and see what happens.
