Trump Copied Another Familys Coat Of Arms

Source: Huffington Post

The emblem’s original bearer “would be rolling over in his grave,” a grandson tells The New York Times.

WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump’s company, the Trump Organization, is marking golf properties and related products in the U.S with a coat of arms that belongs to a different family, after being barred by British authorities from doing so in the United Kingdom, according to a New York Times report on Sunday.

The Trump emblem is a nearly exact copy of the crest Britain granted to American diplomat Joseph Edward Davies in 1939. There’s just one tweak: where the original featured “integritas,” the Latin word for integrity, the president’s version substitutes, inevitably, the name “Trump.”

The billionaire developer appears to have begun using the coat of arms after he bought the Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Baech, Florida, in 1985. The property was being run by a foundation set up by Davies’ third wife, cereal-company heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post.

Davies’ grandson, former Sen. Joseph D. Tydings (D-Md.), told the Times Trump never asked for his permission to adopt the crest. The corrupted version of the emblem is now used on a range of Trump products ― even body wash.

Lion's upper body, lower body a fish's. Somewhat common in British armory.

On edit: Found a picture of Davies' coat of arms. On his the lion has no lower body; it's couped, cut short. So what Trump has is technically not Davies' arms. I don't understand why the British are up in arms (pardon the pun) about this. That tacky rip off of Trump's isn't registered with the Royal College of Heralds, so no laws or policies broken. Just more bad taste and posing.

by old money.

Money can buy you a lot of friends but it can't buy you the *right* kind of friends. Not the kind Trump is hoping to impress.

I wish people wouldn't let him get away with this crap. Undoubtedly, this is why he feels he can take what he wants and nobody will do anything about it.

... he can get one, as long as he pays the appropriate amount of money and has the appropriate designers do it.

Personally I view this as intellectual property theft. In Scotland, misuse of coats of arms is a crime.

Because Trump is American and because America doesn't respect heraldry in the same way (typically just relying on copyright laws) any American can take an existing coat of arms that's considered to be in the public domain (as far as copyright goes) and alter it a bit for their own needs and voila - instant coat of arms.

While it would be amusing if #45 got arrested on a visit to Scotland for this crime, I don't see it happening. IOKIYAR after all, eh?

Right to bear arms? Trump accused of plagiarising family crest

The Trump Organization made only one change: replacing the word "Integrity" with the word "Trump"

It may not be the most dramatic scandal facing Donald Trump this week, but the US president has been accused of branding his US commercial properties with a stolen coat of arms.

Mr Trump's heraldic crest is a near-identical copy of one registered in 1939 by Joseph Edward Davies, the New York Times reported. The copy, printed on everything from golf carts to socks, made a single small change: where the original said "Integritas", now it says "Trump".

Davies was an American diplomat and husband to Marjorie Merriweather Post, who built the Mar-a-Lago resort that now belongs to the president, and where presumably he first saw the coat of arms. The similarity was spotted by Davies' grandson, former US senator Joseph Tydings, on a visit to the resort. He told the Times he had not given permission to the Trump Organization to use the crest.

It drew the attention of heraldic officials in Scotland when Mr Trump attempted to brand a new golf course in Aberdeen with the adulterated crest. They noticed that he hadn't registered it with the Court of the Lord Lyon, which approves all applications for arms and has authority to litigate against anyone using a design improperly.

Note the weasels, the golden golf club, the foot squashing Americans, and of course the motto.
