52 shot in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend, nearly half on final day

Shootings over the Memorial Day weekend left seven people dead and another 45 wounded in Chicago, a sharp drop from last year, though almost half of this year's victims were shot the last night of the weekend.

The violence this weekend was similar to three of the last five Memorial Day weekends: 53 gunshot victims in 2012, and 58 in 2015. A total of 34 people were shot in 2014, and 21 were shot in 2013.

Last year's total was 71 and was the worst since at least 2012. It came during a year that saw almost 800 homicides and more than 4,000 people shot.

This year the most violent day was Memorial Day, with 24 people shot, five of them fatally.

1. It just keeps getting worse and worse here. Now the school are so underfunded and

they are so desperate for money that banks won't lend because the credit is so bad that they are trying to get a payday loan to pay for the schools. It's insane. Kids aren't going to stay away from gangs if their resources are constantly being cut. There is also a big exodus from African Americans from Chicago because of the crime and the costly red light camera fines etc.

It's horrible what is happening to our city.

Federal authority in school district making sure federal and state money is spent on students education ONLY.

all it will do is get junk guns turned in and put 500 bucks in the hands of those who will drive across state line for a brand new even better gun. Gun buy backs are just feel good public relations stunts. Most places now give gift cards.

Even more cops aren't working w/o leadership from state, federal and local agencies & courts. The need a unified response.

I'd say there are more corrupt politicians and their business cronies responsible.

19. There is a lot of poverty and lots of very violent gangs in the west side and south side of Chicago

The city is very segregated. Our mayor finds lots of money for bike paths and parks downtown and in the white areas and there is little money for the areas where blacks live. It's horrible.

I'm a hospice nurse. I go all over the city and visit people in their homes. This is what I see.
