U.S. poised to warn U.N. rights forum of possible withdrawal

By Stephanie Nebehay | GENEVA
The United States is expected to signal on Tuesday that it might withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council unless reforms are ushered in including the removal of what it sees as an "anti-Israel bias", diplomats and activists said.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley, who holds cabinet rank in President Donald Trump's administration, said last week Washington would decide on whether to withdraw from the Council after its three-week session in Geneva ends this month.

Under Trump, Washington has broken with decades of U.S. foreign policy by turning away from multilateralism. His decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement last week drew criticism from governments around the world.

The Council's critical stance of Israel has been a major sticking point for its ally the United States. Washington boycotted the body for three years under President George W. Bush before rejoining under Barack Obama in 2009.

I hate the Orange Man with a passion.

He is a threat to the foundations of the republic, and he is a major embarrassment. But any organization that puts Saudi Arabia on a women's rights panel, a nation where women aren't allowed to be unaccompanied by a male relative or drive a car loses its right to be taken seriously.

He is right randomly and for the wrong reason.

But this commission is a bad joke and, worse, gives cover for bad actors.

It's kind of hard to lead on any issue of human rights when we keep enabling the most brutal Islamic state in the world. Hurts Israel too considering the terrorists they export and anti-Semitism they push. Ironically, we share the blame for any anti-Israel bias while being Israel's biggest defender. It's profit driven insanity.

As America willfully leaves the world stage others nations will fill that vacuum. Soon they will tell us not to let the screen door hit us on the ass on out way out.

said Richard Gowan, a U.N. expert with the European Council on Foreign Relations. “What better way to prepare for a post-Trump environment than to build up a body of evidence that she was not just following the Trump line?”

In what will inevitably become post-Trump world, let's never forget those who enabled him, posturing aside. I'm afraid Haley's careful dance will protect her from her association with him, from the career destruction that should be inevitable for all who enable this administration.
