Brighton siege: Two dead, three police shot, woman held hostage, terror links probed
Source: The Age
Two men are dead, three police officers were shot and a woman was taken hostage in a dramatic siege in the Melbourne bayside suburb of Brighton.
The officers killed the gunman during the shootout. Two were later taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, while the other officer was treated at the scene.
Police had not confirmed the identity of the gunman but a man reportedly called Channel Seven's newsroom during the standoff and said "This is for IS. This is for al-Qaeda"
Police are investigating whether the incident is terror-related and counter-terror investigators were on the scene last night. The suspect was shot dead by police in a volley of gunfire after the woman was taken hostage at the Buckingham Serviced Apartments in Bay Street.

This happened Monday night AEST. Not confirmed yet if terror-related. Brighton is a fairly affluent bayside suburb in the south of Melbourne, not the place this would normally be expected.

"The Seven Network is reporting the gunman called the organisation saying This is for I.S [Islamic State]. This is for al-Qaida.

"Melbourne police last night launched an investigation into whether the attacker had any links to terrorism - and now it's been revealed that he does, with Khayre having faced court in 2009 over the planning of a terror attack on a Sydney army barracks.
"He was later acquitted of the crime, but was involved in a violent home invasion that saw him jailed for at least three years. Khayre was said to have beaten up a young woman and headbutted her father during the robbery.
"He was believed to have been on parole when the hostage drama unfolded on Monday night, and was seen as a low-risk person of interest by anti-terror police, according to The Herald Sun."
