Federal Government Contractor in Georgia Charged With Removing and Mailing Classified Materials to a

Source: DOJ Department of Public Affairs

A criminal complaint was filed in the Southern District of Georgia today charging Reality Leigh Winner, 25, a federal contractor from Augusta, Georgia, with removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet, in violation of 18 U.S.C. Section 793(e).

Winner was arrested by the FBI at her home on Saturday, June 3, and appeared in federal court in Augusta this afternoon.

“Exceptional law enforcement efforts allowed us quickly to identify and arrest the defendant,” said Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein. “Releasing classified material without authorization threatens our nation’s security and undermines public faith in government. People who are trusted with classified information and pledge to protect it must be held accountable when they violate that obligation.”

According to the allegations contained in the criminal complaint:

Winner is a contractor with Pluribus International Corporation assigned to a U.S. government agency facility in Georgia. She has been employed at the facility since on or about February 13, and has held a Top Secret clearance during that time. On or about May 9, Winner printed and improperly removed classified intelligence reporting, which contained classified national defense information from an intelligence community agency, and unlawfully retained it. Approximately a few days later, Winner unlawfully transmitted by mail the intelligence reporting to an online news outlet...

I was hesitant about that Intercept story but Greenwald's name isn't on the byline list and all the reporters I follow on twitter were re-tweeting it. Then, as was evidenced in the DU OP you linked to, numerous other news outlets have confirmed the story.

I still don't trust Glenn Greenwald and would not cite anything with his name on it but, anyway

They published in such a way that it made the whistleblower-hunter's job easy by narrowing the focus.

The Intercept burnt her on purpose. I've got a feeling it exists as a honey trap for whistleblowers, because no organization with the institutional experience of what not to do with whistleblowers would do it again unless they wanted to send a message to other whistleblowers that they're not safe.

Washington Post looks like they may be the safest haven. They know how to protect their sources.

The only other hesitation I would have is if it would not have been better to wait until after Comey's testimony?

Also, does releasing information like this hurt the investigation, especially if there was more things to uncover?

I wonder if the Intercept should have held onto the story a little longer before going public

Rosenstein. “Releasing classified material without authorization threatens our nation’s security and undermines public faith in government. at first glance this appears to have been leaked to the American people. What about Trump? leaking to the russians. who's the threat around here these days?

they'll make hay with this story so that the information it contains, which is damning to the country, is lost. they'll always do that. and they'll get away with it time after time. the story isn't the leaker; it's the russians and the trump administration. i do not want to lose sight of that.

i know this is all really speculative.

Probably lose any VA benefits she had previously earned in the military, never hold another security clearance or position of trust. This is a small one-off incident so after the initial day or two newsflash she'll quickly be forgotten.

They're gonna make an example of her to other federal employees in similar positions though, go for the max sentence from the government side.

If you managed to stick out the 30 plus years, one was rewarded with a fairly decent pension. It tends to develop loyalty and esprit de corps. Of course, pensions have changed since the 80's, but that CSRS pension was developed for that reason.

the leaked information 'Top Secret', and nowhere does it say it was. All it says is 'classified' over and over. How many cans of beans there are in the kitchen on an aircraft carrier is 'classified' FFS.

And if it's the Intercept info, how the hell is that rightfully called 'national defense information'?

It's more like "Drumpf Defense Information".

And who the hell is dumb enough in a job like this ... to contact the media on their damn WORK PC ... and then proceed to hand over classified info they PRINTED OUT, knowing a record is made of said printout ... when that's done?

But we do have a right to know and this information should have been made public via an NSA spokesman.

Unfortunately when documents are leaked they may reveal investigative technologies/techniques that we do not want enemies to be aware of etc etc. Therefore they are "classified".

But there is no reason at all we should have not known about this. NSA could have told us.
