LINCOLN — Experts testifying on behalf of Bold Nebraska say that the Keystone XL would be disastrous for the state’s natural resources and would increase deaths of endangered whooping cranes from striking 68 miles of new electrical transmission lines.

“We need to reduce the threats to this magnificent bird, not increase them,” said one of the experts, Paul Johnsgard, an authority on whooping cranes and a retired University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor.

Johnsgard and the others submitted written testimony Monday on behalf of the Sierra Club, Bold Nebraska and others objecting to the pipeline’s impact on natural resources.

The trio said the state should reject the project’s route across the state, or, at the very least, shift it to eastern Nebraska, where there are fewer stream crossings and fewer miles of sandy/porous soils and where land has already been disturbed by farming.
