Gingrich: A president 'cannot obstruct justice'
Source: The Hill
BY SUMNER PARK - 06/16/17 01:15 PM EDT
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), a staunch supporter of President Trump, said Friday that a "president cannot obstruct justice."
Gingrich said that as president, Trump was well within his authority to fire the head of the FBI.
The president of the United States is the chief executive officer of the United States. If he wants to fire the FBI director, all he has to do is fire him, said Gingrich in comments at the National Press Club, where he was promoting a new book.
His comments sparked pushback on Twitter, with many noting that Gingrich had voted to impeach former President Bill Clinton, including an article that charged him with obstruction of justice.

(12,448 posts)AND arrogant. A horrible combination. Firing an FBI Director, or anyone investigating him, is a classic case of obstruction of justice. Newt is wrong, yet again.

(8,923 posts)"When the President does it, that means that it is not illegal"
So when the President fires the head of the FBI in charge of the investigation,
it's not obstruction of justice.
But Cheetolini admitted that he fired Tomey because of the "Russian thing"
In fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said,
You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story.
Its an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won.

(35,701 posts)Back in 1977, when Newt Gingrich was a professor at West Georgia College, he had an affair with Anne Manning, the wife of another professor.
"We had oral sex," Anne Manning revealed. "He prefers that modus operandi because then he can say, 'I never slept with her.'" She added that Gingrich threatened her: "If you ever tell anybody about this, I'll say you're lying." This anticipated Bill Clinton's defense in the Monica Lewinsky scandal by many years. Great minds think alike!
Back in 1994, when Gingrich became Speaker, spouting family values rhetoric, Democrats were livid, because everyone on Capitol Hill knew that Gingrich was dating Calista Bisek, a Congressional aide who was 23 years younger.
Gingrich is now going through his second divorce. Lawyers for his estranged second wife, Marianne, have won the right to depose Calista Bisek.
