Michael Bloomberg says Democrats should get behind President Trump
Source: Salon
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City and owner of several media outlets, thinks its time that Americans get behind President Donald Trump and make it work.
Democratic opponents of Trump need to get over themselves, Bloomberg argued during an interview on ABCs The View. The public has spoken, whether you like the results or not, he said.

(1,151 posts)The public hasn't spoken, unless by "public" he means "some bigots + the Russians + years of GOP gerrymandering and voter suppression." I guess that is a mouthful.
And even if 90% of Americans were bigoted and brainwashed enough to vote for 45, that doesn't make it right.

Bloomberg may not feel he will be harmed by this administration, but he will along with the rest of us. His wealth will only shield him from the effects for so long.

(6,241 posts)the people did speak. We were just ignored. Trump won by the rules that govern our elections, but that doesn't give him a mandate. He should be fought and ignored for the entire time he's in office. Bloomberg is an idiot.

(7,403 posts)"Make it work" is what the Democrats have been trying to do for a long time, only to be stopped by constant obstruction from the likes of Sen. McConnell. Inclusion is not in the vocabulary of Republicans so what the hell is Bloomberg even thinking. So does Bloomberg think Democrats should "get behind" ripping health insurance away from 23 million Americans? That is the only logical conclusion you can draw from Bloomberg's words.

(6,044 posts)Bloomberg came out against Trump during election cycle-called him a con man.
But in many ways Bloomberg's interests differ from ours.
He is not at risk of losing health care or being plunged into debt and poverty.
Like us he has an interest in stability in the world but we are the ones standing on the edge of the abyss. In contrast he is miles behind the front lines.
He is a billionaire and huge resources at his disposal. When there is massive income inequality, we are not "all in this together.
He did did comment on the that that Democrats are divided and I think the absence of a united front leads him to belief we cannot overcome and should deal as best we can for the time being.
I think he is wrong but I am not prepared to attack him.

Get behind him? What has he done that would give me any reason to get behind him? Every day is another thumb in the eye--another punch to the gut.
He believes that he can do anything he wants and we all have to just deal with it. Now, Bloomberg, another fucking billionaire, is going to tell us how we should behave?
The truth is there will always be a giant asterisk on this election. Trump is not legitimate. He was, at the very least, elected by a minority of the citizens of this country. He doesn't have sufficient support to claim any mandate to govern. Neither does the House or the Senate.
So, they're trying to jam as much shit down our throats as quickly as possible before it all blows to hell.
These people aren't right in the head.
Bloomberg, who probably hasn't talked to a regular person in decades, is telling us what we ought to do?
Trump is a usurper. History is not kind to illegitimate rulers.

(5,801 posts)that when Bernie was doing well in the primaries, Bloomberg threatened to enter the presidential race to ensure that a "socialist" didn't become president. I'm citing this not to delve into the Bernie vs. Hillary matter but rather to show that Bloomberg not only couldn't stomach the thought of an FDR-style nominee but also that he freaked out at the concept of "socialism" entering the political mainstream.
He obviously believes that the little people should just shut up and sit back while the billionaires run things.

(31,445 posts)Entrepreneur and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) plans to launch a $17 million contest to incentivize U.S. cities to bypass policy making in Washington under the Trump administration, according to The Associated Press.
Thirty-five cities will win $100,000, while four other cities will get $1 million. The grand prize is $5 million for one city. The contest, which will be publicly unveiled on Monday, is aimed at pushing mayors across the country to tackle issues on their own, without federal help.
Bloombergs incentive comes as many leaders of U.S. cities find themselves concerned about policies put forth by the Trump administration, in particular concerning climate change. Cities across the U.S. pledged to meet the goals set by the Paris climate accord after President Trump announced his intention to pull the U.S. out of the nearly 200-nation deal earlier this year.
The projects involved in the contest would likely focus on issues important to Bloomberg, such as climate change, opioids and gun control.

Many of their products seem to lack basic education. For instance, the "tyranny of the majority" shows up in one our most founding of documents and is discussed by known commentators on democracy in other writings as well.
And Mr. Bloomberg, even though I try really, REALLY hard not to invoke the H person, just let's keep Germany in, oh, say 1936, in the back of our minds when we are talking about marching along with the prevailing winds.
