Illinois lawmakers override Governor's budget veto
Source: New York Times
Chicago - Illinois lawmakers overrode a veto of the Republican governor on Thursday, giving the state its first full budget in more than two years and ending the longest such impasse for any state in modern history.

At least ten Republicans abandoned Rauner! Illinois has a budget, because a few republicans put people over party. It can be done.

(260 posts)I'm a state employee here in Illinois and we've been hurting for 2 years over this. I had to pay my dental bills out of pocket because the state isn't reimbursing my insurance company.
The tax increase is going to sting, but at least it's cheaper than the 200% increase in medical contributions that Rauner wanted us to pay.
Speaking of him, this is an utter humiliation. The override has neutered him and made him irrelevant. That's the one place you don't want to be, especially when 2018 is coming and Democrats are energized to vote more than ever.

(23,545 posts)as did rahm. He could do it again. He is going to bash the dems like crazy over the new taxes. Most people I talk to are furious at Madigan.
I do predict we will be stuck with rauner for a long long time.

(30,741 posts)Let Ruiner bash. He bought and won his election by a very narrow margin. People will remember. I have a feeling Madigan is already figuring out how to put the S.O.B. in jail. Anyway, that's where most of our governors go after they serve.
Madigan can let the fury roll off his back like water off a duck. He is that powerful.
Don't rule out Pritzker. He has already started his bid to buy the election, too. I know a lot of Democrats who like him. I favor Kennedy, but I would have no problem voting for Pritzker.
This is a powerful Democratic state. We have money in this election, and a GOTV apparatus already in place.

(30,741 posts)I love the politics in this state. Chicago is the best for politics. The city of big shoulders!
I have always been an activist. I have had my face ripped off a few times. So has my son. We just put on a new face and get right back into it.
I think there is something in the water here. We produce either statesmen or crooks. It does not matter which party. We have Lincoln, Stevenson, Paul Simon, Obama. Then we have all those governors who go to jail, including Blagojevich, Ryan, Walker.

(10,437 posts)The budget was a separate conflict.....and soon as the courts work out the ruling....expect big price hikes and/or a strike.
My wife just retired from the state.

(4,354 posts)and keep Illinois from going to junk bond status. Hopefully this will start to turn things around. It's likely that Rauner's strategy was to bankrupt Illinois so he and his cronies could buy what would be left for pennies on the dollar. Similar to the Detroit mess. These reichwingers are an ugly lecherous bunch.
With Rauner's re-election campaign approaching, I hope this helps defeat him at the polls. Although he did recently give his campaign $50 million if I remember correctly.

The millionaire governor needs to quit making campaign commercials and try governing. He also needs to quit following the publicity strategy of the twitterer-in-chief.
How is your head feeling today, Bruce?
Many thanks to our Illinois House and Senate for reaching a compromise (after only two years).
