Both sides to blame in Virginia - Trump

Source: BBC

US President Donald Trump has criticised both sides for the violent unrest in Charlottesville, Virginia, which left one protester dead and others injured.

There were "things that people don't know", he told reporters.

In a statement on Monday, he had condemned right-wing white supremacists.

He defended the time it took to make the statement, saying he had wanted to establish all the facts.

Don't you get it? Trump has elevated Dubya's "post-factual society" to the next level. Make up whatever you want to be true, declare it loudly, and a significant percentage of the country will believe it, just because you said it. Don't you remember "Muslims in New Jersey celebrating 9/11"...? The very fact of this president having said it makes it at least debatably true, because many will take him at his word, and the rest of us will be constantly battling to establish the truth of something that is self-evident...and only occasionally succeeding.

Trump doubles down on initial Charlottesville response, saying ‘there is blame on both sides’ for violence

President Trump on Tuesday said that counterprotesters at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville over the weekend acted violently and should share the blame for the mayhem that left a woman dead and many others injured. The president also defended those protesting the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue.

In a testy exchange with reporters at Trump Tower, the president called the events on Saturday a "horrible thing to watch," but he emphasized that both sides of the clashes contributed to the violence.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

He was supposed to be making a "statement" or whatever on his infrastructure plans and here we are again.

When he's attacked and forced to do something, he seethes, and then makes matters worse. He is entirely predictable and will NEVER EVER change.

Remember the Rodney King beating? Caught it all out there on videotape. No question about what happened, but the officers initially walked, because "there must be more than what we saw on the tape."

It's the easiest thing in the world for an authority figure to tell you to accept their word, because they know more than you. Most of the time, it succeeds, because listeners are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Will that happen this time? Don't know, but Trump has put us in a difficult situation, because we now have to prove there was no violence, period, from "the other side." That's proving a negative, which is basically impossible, whereas all it takes is a single image of one antifa protestor with a baseball bat, or punching a Nazi, to "prove" Trump's point, and lead us full on into false moral equivalency, where one leftist with a primitive armament balances out five hundred Nazis with assault rifles.

...most presidents do have such sources, and know more than us. And most people realize and accept this, in the average case.

It's just that this particular president uses that rationale to make up whatever he wants. I'm not sure we've reached the point where enough of a "critical mass" of voters recognizes that.

He and his staff needed all weekend to go through James Alex Fields' Facebook page, Instagram feed, Twitter feed and other social media sites to scrub his online presence of any signs of support for Donald Trump. They were probably ready to add a few photoshopped pictures of Fields in Hillary or Obama gear, but that would be too obvious.

That's pretty strong commentary from the BBC, which normally tried to be moderate.

"He asked whether statues of former presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson should also be torn down, because they had been slave-owners."

They didn't wage war on the country you nominally led, you bigoted, fascistic, corrupt moron.

There is no equivalency.

Both sides were violent, but only one side used deadly force in two separate incidents:

1) Killing Heather Heyer.

2) Nearly killing Deandre Harris.

That same side showed up with "militia" with many assault rifles.
