Ann Arbor Dana Nessel, one of the lead attorneys for the two Hazel Park women who were part of the landmark lawsuit that opened the door for all same-sex couples to legally marry in the United States, announced her candidacy Tuesday for Michigan attorney general.

Detroit-area attorney Dana Nessel will announce her candidacy for Michigan Attorney General at an event in Ann Arbor on Tuesday, she confirmed.

Nessel gained prominence in Michigan as she fought for April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse, a lesbian couple who originally sued for the right to have both of their names appear on adoption documents for their kids.

At the suggestion of a federal judge, the case expanded into a fight for gay marriage and ended up overturning Michigan's constitutional ban on gay marriage. The couple married in 2015.
