Gingrich: Trump needs to 'quit stepping on himself'

The window for President Donald Trump to be a remarkably great president remains open, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday morning, but to fit through it, Trump has to quit stepping on himself with rhetoric that distracts from his agenda.
As an example, Gingrich pointed to last weeks impromptu Trump Tower news conference, an event billed as remarks from the president about infrastructure reforms that quickly devolved into Trump suggesting that there had been very fine people on both sides of deadly clashes at a white supremacist rally this month in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The last thing hes got to do, and I'm being very candid here, is hes got to quit stepping on himself. He had a very good infrastructure press conference the other day, and then he stepped on it, blew it, guaranteed that it wouldn't get covered, Gingrich told Fox Newss Fox & Friends Monday morning. that's like a quarterback who goes out and throws the ball down to the other side and fumbles on the first play of every possession.
The former speaker, a top surrogate for Trumps campaign who remains in contact with the president, said rhetorical discipline is one of the steps Trump must take to repair his relationships with Republican lawmakers, some of which have become fractured after months of so far fruitless legislative battles, and refocus on pursuing his agenda.

(9,426 posts)would make that statement. In the view of democratic voters, tRump NEVER stood a snowball's chance in hell of being even a mediocre president. Of course, we expect our presidents to be WAY above average in intelligence, class, family values and other good qualities. If a guy says he is wealthy, then he is excellent for the gop. Who listens to this fat, pompous gasbag, anyway?

(4,742 posts)By now he's had a million advisers and opportunities to change the way he is. During the campaign and now during the past 7 months he has proven he's a one trick pony. His ego, paranoia, and narcissism get the best of him always. He can't change that at 70 years old. It is ingrained in him.

(32,639 posts)...it almost seems like John Boehner wasn't that bad after all. I mean I hated Boehner but these guys are downright evil.
John Boehner seems like he took things seriously - to a point. After 5 o'clock he stopped being an asshole until the next day. But Gingrich and McConnell are just non-stop 24-hour spawn of Satan.

Maybe he can take solace that Trump would be a bankrupt entertainer if Newt hadn't made scorched-earth politics normal. Or not.
